Even though there's deposits of it on earth...

Explanation: Maybe Energon only becomes "active" when it's around Cybertronians, otherwise it's indistinguisable from some common Earth material... like Quartz or something.

Part of me wants to say they know, but the government is covering up its existence. Maybe they are currently looking into using it as an alternative fuel source, adapting it for Earth technology. Who knows?

Energon is like a ultra refined oil if G1 is anything to go by. Remember when they storm the offshore oil platform, and they start pouring oil in to energon cubes?

It's the way I've always seen it, just ultra refined petrol.

As far as the heavily visible crystal deposits (whether deep underground, or especially above-ground ones like the area Cliffjumper had found moments before his death), I'm not entirely sure.

In at least "Deus ex Machina," though, it's been shown that some energon has sort of integrated into natural Earth stone, becoming kind of disguised as a regular mineral. In that regard, anyway, I suppose quite a bit of energon can stay hidden from humans. *shrug*

Prime humans are idiots who can't see ships sticking out in plain sight.

Yeah, the plainly-visible crystals bother me too. If I was going to do it, I would locate the Energon deep underground, in ancient TF bunkers left over from wars that preceded the current generation of Transformers. Either that, or I would bite the bullet, have humans discover it, and explore the changes.

because people would get suspicious as to where all this extra oil was coming from and if they said energon then they might as well tell the world that transformers exist and so forth

Well, there ARE giant crystals in real life but that doesnt mean is Energon. ^^ Maybe for the folks of the TFP universe the Energon crystals are just regular giant crystals and dont pay attention to it.

Not only humans are that stupid: all the decepticons didn't manage to set up a system, which could csan and report about Autobots' visits, regarding the SpaceBridges to the WarShip.
I can't understand, why soundWave hasn't done anything like this yet.

    I have just thought...
May be, all the nearest Energon had been ruined during Earth's cataclysm- by meteorite's threat, following explosions, tsunami, inundation, continental platforms' movements and so on.
Then, was used by ancient nations, run totaly out and the description of this matter had perished or was lost and dissolved in old legends about miracle-working stones and minerals and shaman's cases...So, nowadays we just can't determine its description from all half- erased stories, while even having plenty of mentions about this Energy.

And now, we have only those deposits, which were too far from cataclysms and humans' greed- mostly, deeply inside the body of our planet, under the protection of Unicron and other nature's manifestations, which still keep humans far away by climatic conditions and landscape unequality.

This is one of the largest flaws of Prime. We have to suspend our disbelief about human stupidity.

I thought that was just them converting the oil into a synthetic Energon. They also do the same thing with rubies later on.

In G1, it was converted energy. They used oil, turbines, windmills, whatever they could think of short of each other to suck the energy out of.
