How well was RID Landfill/CR Build King received back then?

I recently got the Devastator redeco of RID Landfill and I was wondering how well the mold was received when it first got released? Far from being the perfect combiner, but it does have an interesting design...

A lot of people don't like it...I personally love it.
With the right pose, you can make it look pretty great.

I have all 4 decos of it.

I wasn't collecting when it was new. But I don't remember seeing it in stores.

I like the individual bot modes better then the overall combiner mode. I had Landfill back in the day. Lost him in a move though with most of my RID figures. I thought he was fairly well received but fans are a very picky bunch. I own the Devy redeco now and I love the individual bots but not so much the combiner.

I remember it being a figure people were excited about due to the innovation but a touch disappointed that the same innovation lead to the toy being somewhat unstable. 3 out of the 4 individual figures were praised while Build Hurricane/Grimlock was universally panned, justifiably so.

RID Landfill has PCC levels of badness.

I had the Devastator repaint. I actually liked the individual bots quite a bit... even more so than the combined form. I think I like Grimlock best. He has a cool head sculpt and his bot mode is quite interesting.

The individual bot modes were good, but the combined mode didn't do much for me.

Fixed, though only a few PCC can qualify.

I always really liked how it looks and works, but the only really good figure of it was Wedge (also my first Transformer).

    Ruination agrees.

Seriously, Josh's post can't be emphasized enough. Team Bullet Train, the Build Team, and Ruination . . . O_O Mind = blown :bay

The thing newer fans will never understand is the crazy levels of need we had for G1 homages, and even just vehicle transformers at the time. This wasn't a day when you could say "well do I want the energon Devestator, the Target exclusive Devestator, the Wal-Mart Exclusive Devestator, the Fansproject Hercules, the ROTF Devestator, or the reissue G1 Devestator?" This was IT, the first construction vehicle team combiner since the original, and holy goddam was it exciting. It may have aged badly, but at the time it was received like the love child of the Pope and the Dalai Lama.

I love this set. Grimlocks the only one I'm not a big fan of, and he doesn't feel quite as awkward if you get him in a good pose. I would love to troop build Hightower, he's my favorite of the set and just has a good soldier feel to him. I love the combined mode, very unique in combination and appearance.

As said, back then it was pretty amazing. No, well, I like it simply because it tried something different with modular combiners, having three of the four members each able to form a leg or arms. They really haven't tried anything like it since.

I loved it when I got it, I think the RID combiners were the last "official" combiners released that didn't suck. I loved them all. Even if Ruination was just a repaint of the G1 combiner, JRX and the Build Team were just stellar.

Just to rabbit trail just a little bit, I think Ruination is significant because it pulled a G1 mold into a modern toy line. For me, I never had a single Combatiton as a kid, and this was my first experience with the molds.

I think the Build Team and Team Bullet Train have aged quite well.

As others have said, just to have these three combiners at retail at the time (like the other vehicles) was a BIG DEAL.
