You're telling me. It's gotten to the point that after I've had a TF for a couple of days, my wife asks "So what did you have to fix on that one?" :D

I just did this. Wow, this is how the toy should have been made to begin with! I hated the spring in the other arm. No point in that feature unless it locks into place, or doesn't spring back.

    yay for switching the springs!

I just switched the spring as well and it fits in nicely. Could this be an assembly error?

I still have no idea how the canon remains open (unless Peaugh replaced the spring).

There's no spring in the cannon. I took the spring from the cannon and placed in into the other arm so his claw whip shoots out. The cannon stays in whatever mode you put it in. You can put a teensy bit of nail polish on the inner hinges to tighten it up a bit if you wish.

Peaugh, thank you for your instructions and pics. I just finished modifying my Megatron and I am very impressed with the outcome. I had no idea the cannon was on a sliding hinge either. Megs just went from a good toy to a great toy in my book.

Sure thing! I figured pictures would help. I can't take credit for coming up with the spring switch, Ogami Daigoro mentioned it on page three of this thread, apparently it came from somewhere over on Tformers.com. Although it was while doing this I found the sliding part.

Here's the link to the page where I first heard of it. It was on the comments section of the review, for anyone who really cares. But someone in TFW's feedback section may have also figured it out before I first heard of the spring switch. I can't really take credit for finding it out.

The cannon arm def looks like its supposed to have a spring, and they took the claw flail one out. Im happy i switched them though, hes alot more fun now. I can see why they took it out, the claw is pretty pointy as opposed to the basic missle, and the short cord makes it swing around the arm really fast. i also like that my cannon stays out.

Can someone please post some photos of Megatron with the spring in his whip arm and show what difference it makes.

The claw arm makes a world of difference, shooting out like a missile, even if the cord is stored in the arm. I'll get some pictures of it tomorrow (later today, technically) since the wife and baby have already gone to bed and I'd have to turn on the lights upstairs to get him.

I have been thinking about this spring "switcharoo" situation. I think the reason there is no spring on the shooter arm is because as a missle it is shorter than the legally "safe" toy requirement length of a missle, even though it is tied down with the chain. Hasbro had no choice but to go springless. As for the other arm, I think the spring is supposed to be there, unless Hasbro cleverly decided to smuggle the spring in the other arm, like smuggling keys in a pie to someone in Jail (which is highly unprobable).

Anyway, It is so much more awesome with the spring switched. When it (spring) was in the other arm, holding the weapon out hurt my finger, I can't imagine how hard it would be if I was 5 years old. Awesome toy.

Every day I eagerly wait to get home from school thanks to the switch. (He's now my all-time favorite TF! Both on-screen and off!)

Here we go, sorry about the delay, yesterday got real busy real fast.

I don't have a whole step by step, but it's simple. Unscrew the cannon arm, pull the spring out, then unscrew the whip arm and attach the spring to the post on the trigger like so:

(it's the larger spring, not the smaller one on the back of the trigger.) Then just screw the arm back together and voila!

(Sorry for the slightly blurry pic, my camera wasn't focusing properly for some reason.)
