OK so basically we had a water cut for a few hours, i accidently forget to close the tap while me and my family went outside for a few hours. Came back home to see the whole living room carpet drenched in water about 1inch high. My mum dried it with blotting towels, hoovering, fans etc, its still damp but now that the carpet is in the drying process it stinks so much i feel like puking everytime i smell it :(  and my mum is going to replace the carpet next week because its a old carpet anyway.

What can we do to get rid of the awful odour its so disgusting its like a damp constant smell :(  and it was all my fault for doing this, can anyone recommend anything? i tried putting carpet perfume in the carpet that didnt help, tried spraying air freshner, scent candles still doesnt get rid of it :(  do you think fungus or mould will begin to grow since the conditions are damp im scared of hygiene issues!

best bet for a temporary solution would be simply getting a bunch of febreeze and keeping a fan on it at all times, ventilation will definately help.

The only way to rid the smell is to thoroughly clean and let properly dry, and its way to much work if your just replacing the carpet

Hmm well it depends on the type of carpet and the extend of the damage. Post a picture of yourself with the carpet and we might be able to help.

The best way to remove a smell from carpet is to subject it to a high intensity light source for a very small amount of time. This 'flash' would cause the nano-silver particles in the moist carpet to agitate, therefore making them release their smell-producing spores and micro-bacterial particles.

The best way to achieve this without a Thermogaussian Release chamber would be with a standard camera flash. It's important that you stand in front of the flash as it emits, as the heat from your own body will add to the effect and also act as a filter, distributing the emissions better.

Then post the picture here, so I can tell you if you're doing it right.

Get a dehumidifier pull the molding of the wall drill holes in the wall to let the water dry from behind the wall. Replace the padding under the carpet. It's not cheap had to do this last week.

That sucks. I would say just scrap it now and live with the base flooring until the new arrives.

Did the carpet by any chance match the drapes? I've heard that sometimes carpet will dry quicker if the drapes are of the same fabric and color. Something to do with light opacity and other scientific stuff.

I also heard it can stink from animals munching on it. All that bad breath will rub off and make it stinky from the carpet munching.

If it's green, then you're stuck in the '70s!
