30-60 minutes should do it. I dropped them in, watched a couple of episodes of Archer, then took them out and brushed them.

Does the alcohol and superclean process create any bad odors? I have nosy neighbors and I don't want to be accused of cooking meth if they smell something weird.

Ha! No, nothing strong enough for neighbors to smell.

This was a great way to get rid of the red/chrome. Thanks Cheetimus and I really like it much better this way. Now I just need to add a little red and black paint, some reprolabels, when they get around to it, and Jetfire will be almost perfect.

Just did it without the alcohol. Put it in for 18 hours just in super clean, and it all came off.

I did this to my Jetfire today. Looks great! I had to the super clean for awhile.

So... if I understand correctly, you can do it ALL with Super Clean. It just takes longer if you don't do the alcohol first?

Super Clean still removes paint, right?

How about disassembling the backpack, is this required ? I've tried taking it apart and it's held in by 2 screws and a rivet. Would it be ok to soak the White/black parts from the backpack as well in alcohol/super clean as guys over here (the UK) seem to use over cleaner instead of super lean as it's more available

No, the metal bits will likely start to corrode afterwords.

No, the metal bits will likely start to corrode afterwords. After taking out the screws you should be able to get the boosters off.

The metal WILL corrode. I used it this weekend and stupidly soaked the parts in an aluminum pan. I no longer have that aluminum pan.....

I had to bring this up again as I just now got around to dechroming Jetfire. Thanks again for posting this, it worked wonderfully. I'm used it to strip chrome off some other old parts as well. Its crazy how well that stuff removes chrome plating.

I tried this, and for some reason the red paint would NOT come off with 91% isopropyl alcohol. I soaked for a day and scrubbed with a brush, nada - just a faint red tinge in the bowl. Finally, I just soaked the parts in Super Clean, and after 3 days the clear red paint started flaking off in solid chunks, only because the solution seeped under the paint and dissolved the chrome underneath.

Not sure if my Jetfire used a different paint formulation, or I just needed to use denatured alcohol. Just wanted to pass my experience along in case it helps.

Hi. I've been soaking my Jetfire pieces in SuperClean for about 30 hours and it's almost completely clean of chrome. I didn't use any denatured alcohol. Just the SuperClean and it worked great. Found it in the automotive section of Walmart. Here's my question: Does anyone know how to remove the chrome off his gun? The gun has a metal spring inside, so I don't want it to corrode. Has anyone tried anything?

I wasn't worried about the spring in mine so I just removed the screw on the outside and dropped it in since it didn't want to come apart so I could remove the spring. However, once the chrome was gone it comes apart easily, just like the boosters. The chrome plate seems to be sort of gluing it together. I would think you could remove the screw and then carefully go around the seam line on the center of the gun with an Xacto knife and to get it to pop apart so you could remove the spring. Once you score the chrome finish it should be easier to get apart.

Cut around the seam first and pop it apart. This will corrode the spring no question. I used this again over the weekend too. Dropped a rerelease king poseidon sword into this and a couple hours later had a lovely lavendar sword instead of chrome.

    Hey UK based folk!

A little tip from fellow UK Transformers collector and board member Leakin' Lubricant, try using Silver polish and cleaner 'SILVO' which takes off tampo's, paint apps and vacuumized chrome with just a minor amount of elbow grease.
It leaves a small amount of residue which is easily washed off.;)
I have added a couple of photos which show chrom and paint removed!
Available at all good stockists and Tesco!:p
