do they figure out who their fellow autobots or cons when they've found an ALT mode ? Or identify another ?

I can understand that Ironhide could pick out Starscream. He was flying low and erractically in the city. Pretty much SS's way.

My guess, I'd assume the Transformers would be able to detect specific energy signatures from other Transformers (such as that "forcefield" the army guys detected around Blackout) and possibly identify their identity from that.

Beyond that, the Autobots did meet up with each other as soon as they landed on the planet.

Yup. It's probably a mix of instinct and mechanical influence. Sentient robots have both.

How do you recognize your friends when they (hopefully) change their clothes every day?

They change their clothes. Not their physical form.

I would go with the energy signature explanation.

Explain Frenzy then. I would have to go with the detection of a Decpticon energy signiture explanation. It's the one that makes the most sense. I would have to think that the specific energy sigs of key Decepticons would be distributed amongst the Autobot forces like most wanted posters are distributed amongst police forces.

    "My bad..."

I sway with the detection thing too, they're aliens so who's to say they don't have a sorta aura thing to identify who's friend or foe? I think I heard once they used encrypted code dampers, to maintain security in battle so one guy doesn't accidentally target his own man

Because they are alien robots with technology that we couldn't possibly hope to understand.

I tend to go with the idea that they each have a unique individual energy signature of some sort they use to identify each other, this could also have ad added layer that separates them as Autobot or Decepticon so they don't accidentally shot at one of their own in the heat of battle.
But who knows really they are aliens after all, which people seem to forget sometimes.

My guess is that Transformers aren't real, and we're all just making this shit up as we go along.

Um...the autobots have a preset rendezvous point. Ironhide doesn't recognize Starscream till the soldiers get suspicious. I would say its more warrior's intuition then sensors. They were waiting for a decepticon attack and the autobots probably had a good idea of who followed megatron to earth. After that it is only a process of elimination

If Ratchet can "sense the decepticons are mobilizing" all the way from Griffiths Park Observetory, then anythings possible.
