I'm getting my second cat tommorow and I'm wondering how I should introduce a small kitten to my adult female cat. I used to have two cats an adult male and the female I just mentionened. The adult male was the older cat I had had him for about four years before I decided to get the female. About two years after I got the female, the male cat ran away (he just got out the door one day and he ran, never to be seen again). I forgot how I introduced those two. So now with a new kitten on the way I'm need to know how to intoduce the kitten to a realatively calm female cat. My female cat is spayed, if that info helps.

I was going to say ground up and put into a cat food bowl, but that works too.

First, keep them separated for at least a few days, but DON'T keep the kitten in what's traditionally been the older cat's place, like your bedroom. Put the kitten in the bathroom or elsewhere.

Ignore the kitten and pay all attention to the older cat so she's not jealous. The kitten will adapt and more likely to bond with the other cat which is what you want. Helps to say the older cat's name first whenever you say the younger cat's, too, like the kitten belongs to the older cat.

Put them both in a carrier, then spray it with water. They'll clean each other, and share stories and become inseparable. It's called the "Vietnam War Buddies" effect.

This. Keep them separated. After a while, if the older cat is an outside cat, let the kitten explore one of the rooms then put back in the cage or bathroom. When the older cat comes back in, he'll smell and explore the room again. When it was time, we held our kitten tightly and had the older one smell his butt.

Eventually they get used to each other. This little one will annoy the older one and the older one will tell him who's boss.

Because the main problem that occurs with introducing a kitten into a household with an older cat is jealousy. Everyone's temptation is to pay all attention to the kitten and none to the older cat, which will make the older cat believe she's losing her position in the house and family, and she will take it out on the interloper - the kitten. With the size differences, this could be severely detrimental to the kitten. However if a lot of positive attention is showered on the older cat, she will be reassured that she has not been replaced and see the kitten as a GOOD thing. She may even decide that the kitten is hers, which is a good thing as well. And using the older cat's name when you're talking nice to the younger cat helps because you're including the older cat like SHE'S the one being praised and associating that positive reinforcement with the new kitten, i.e."Fluffy's Snowball is such a good kitty!" "Fluffy and Snowball are such good kitties!"

Note this is not the same as introducing two adult cats - in those cases, you pay equal attention to each as they work out their pecking order.

i've been in the same situation 3 times, each time i just plop the kitten in front of the cat and it goes mental. after a day they're best buddies, simple. especially if the older cat is female, it'll go all parental. it should be pretty straightforward.
