Just put an order in for a new 'puter.
    Core2Duo 1.86, 320GB HD, 1GB Ram(5300), Black Xion case.... $800cdn

Just wondering how often you buy a computer. I usually go every 3-5 years and when I buy I make sure it's fully upgradeable for at least the next year...and I'll pop in new components as needed.

I've only bought one machine in my life. But it's starting to get up there. I maxed it out at purchase, and upgraded several parts over the past year, and it's still a solid computer. But it's about time to move on.

Technically never! I've always just built them myself and replaced parts when they die or need upgrading. I did trade about $200 in Transformers and other toys for a laptop with a 2.6GHz processor, 40Gb hard drive, 512Mb of RAM, etc.
That's definitely my favorite computer acquisition.

That's an interesting philosophical question. I've replaced every single part of my computer at one point or another. Is it the same computer?

The longest a cell in your body can live for is six years. Are you the same person you were six years ago, even though none of your physical body is alive anymore?

I used to upgrade every year when I worked regularly in IT.

I've had my current PC for the past 2-3 years now as I've been afraid to mess around with it as it's worked so problem free all these years. Will probably think about an upgrade next summer though as I'll probably need some more horsepower to run Vista and make all my current/future stuff run quicker as I am finding stuff slowing down a bit.

I've had my current one for about 2.5 years and the one before that for about 4 years. If this one's having trouble when I move next year, I'll get a new one, but if it's working fine, I'll just keep it. I really only use my computers for Word processing, watching DVDs and surfing the 'net, so it's not like I need to upgrade for any reason.

Hmmm I think I just get to the point where I've replaced everything once and I don't really want to go through it all over again.
Time to start fresh. Plus I'm tired of waiting for the computer to burn a VCD or DVD of my most recent recordings... if I use it while it's burning, well I usually get a coaster for my troubles :p

I hate when that happens. Usually, if I burn a DVD, I start it before I go to bed. That way, I know its not going to be disturbed.

I've never purchased my own computer yet...
But here at home, we have had this computer for just about 5-6 years.
The one before it only lasted 3 years
And the one before that, a 486! Well, that one we had for quite a while...

But I did win a laptop last year :D

hardly but i do upgrade parts (mostly the HD, video card, and memory)...

but after X-Mas, we plan on building our next computer(s)...a Core 2 Duo (and maybe a 3.6Ghz) that way my g/f and I can have one each to use. Can't wait, my current one is a P4 2.2Ghz which i've had for 4 years now and it sucks when she's on playing Starcraft Online and i'm waiting for it.

I've had the "same" computer since about 2002, but there's not a single component left that's the same. I've just gradually upgraded over time as things needed replacing. So I guess now it's a whole new computer, but it's been a slow and eventual process. Although I would like to get a laptop for next year as that would come in rather handy indeed.

I've had the same computer for 5-6 years, but I have upgraded it's components. it's cheaper than having to buy an entirely new system. Fun too!

My home computer must be about 2 years old since I got a new one and the last one had a total meltdown.

I could do with upgrading it as the case is getting to small for it, and the motherboard only accepts AGP cards (got a new one last April along with my flat panel monitor)
Could also do with getting a new processor as the one I'm running on is about a 1.4GHz
Plus my Soundcard isn't going to be supported by Vista, which means shelling out for a new on of those.

So now I have to decide on whether to upgrade or buy a new one.

Average about three years. But I've had my current one for almost five (not counting swapping out a few parts), and it's horribly outdated. Next year I'm planning to buy an entirely new one.

Ive had mine for about 5 years, added new hard drives and dvdrw drive, but its remained pretty much the same. Still works great.
