I was just wondering how much money a transformer would cost back in 1984, like say, how much did a typical Autobot car cost? I've heard quite a few people say they were expensive toys.

No, they don't. And yet I've heard quite a few people remark at how expensive they were back then. They were probably expensive for their size though, and because it was the 80's after all.

    Thank's Waverider!

Well, remember to account for inflation. $10 in 1984 is like $20 now (not exactly, but along those lines).

Keep in mind that many of us were no doubt children then and didn't have disposable incomes like we do now. Saving one's allowance to buy TFs etc.

The above posts are right, Heh, I almost forgot about inflation. These probably were expensive to a kid in the 80's.

I'm shocked at Jetfire's price; I recently got one complete in the box, and it's BIG! I expected it to be about $40-50 back then.

Keep in mind inflation and such. Transformers WERE pricey back in the day, and up until a few years ago, Transformers products were regularly among the pricier toylines out there. For the price of a given TF Autobot car or Seeker jet, you could 3-4 GI Joe action figures, or a mid-sized vehicle for nearly any other toyline.

Yup. I remember seeing him on the store shelf with the prices of $24.99 burned into my memory forever.

I remember thinking $8.00 was expensive back then, but, it was all worth it.

I remember getting special team leaders for $10, with the limbs costing about $5 each. Paid $12 ea for the insecticons at a drug store. The third paycheck I ever got from my summer job working at the park almost all went for the $99.99 I paid for Fort Max. If I'd known then, I would have bought one each week and never cracked the tape.

I said this many times when this subject comes up. Do any of you notice that the price is relatively the same for todays TF's if you try to compare them 80's from their respected size class.

Yep, TFs weren't really cheaper "back in the day" - in fact, we're actually paying less for your average TF these days (relatively and inflation adjusted) than back then.

^ Yup, it's a beautiful thing. Now we have the disposable income to make up for all those ones we missed out on the first time around. $$$ + internet = reclaimed childhood. :D

The TFs-Gobots price comparison on that site has got me curious. I don't know a whole lot about Gobots but when you compare the Puzzler vehicles to TF Gestalt components of the same era, The completed Combiners come to about the same price. Man, Being a kid in that era would have meant making some tough decisions... "Mom, Should I get a Transformer or a Gobot? This one's cool & this one's cool too. & they cost about the same. Mom, Which one should I get?" :lol

Well, I was 2 years old in '84... My parents were like 21/23 yrs old and just starting out... Minimum wage was less than $3.50... Yep, I can see why I never got any toys.

BUT now, with our powers combined! I AM CAP... I mean, I CAN BUY MY OWN TOYS! Muhahahaha!
