Enough that a GPS can't prevent you from getting lost in them.

    This.

And each of those branches out into its own mini-continuities.

Except SG for some reason. Or we just haven't seen an altered SG yet..

This is one of those things you're better off not concerning yourself with.

The only thing I haven't seen mentioned is splitting Galaxy Force off from Micron Legend/Armada & Superlink/Energon. Wasn't it separate in Japanese continuity?

Isn't War Within part of Dreamwave G1?

That's not really simplified, because then you have to spend 78 years explaining the contradictions and different origins and personalities of characters. Right off the bat, you can't have all the versions of "G1" together.

And if you really were going to somehow try to lump the G1 cartoon in together with the comics and whatever else, does something like Shattered Glass really deserve to have its own continuity? Hell no.

Really depends on what all you count, this is my own personal list:

    -G1
    -BW/BM
    -RID
    -A/E
    -Cyb.
    -Movies
    -Animated
    -Aligned

Shattered Glass will, as far as I'm concerned, never be official, Takara's whole thing just confuses me to no end, and yes, I do NOT consider Cybertron to be a part of what's commonly called the "Energon trilogy". It was definitely at one point meant to be in that same continuity, but there's to much that messed all that up for it to actually be in-cannon with Armada and Energon.

There's also a TFA SG, though we've only seen it via a botcon lithograph and club magazines, due to Season 4 getting cancelled.

    Too many.

I can't think of any other property that has this many splintered continuities.

But then, I don't follow Doctor Who.

Yeah, it was. When it got dubbed into English, it got shoehorned into the Armada and Energon continuity.

At least seventy-five million, eighty-hundred-and-ninety thousand and seven, and potentially fifteen quadrillion. And that's canon! :)

And then Takara doubled back and said "Oh, wait, no, no, it's in continuity after all."

Why not? Even within these discrete universes (Marvel UK, for example), it's a bugger to work everything out. 'The Enemy Within' and 'Earthforce' (to name but two) are an absolute headache to fit in with the established continuity.

If we can pull off advanced mental gymnastics that allow us to fit 'Man of Iron' somewhere during the events the first four US issues, then surely it's no harder to fit, say, the UK Ladybird books also into the same narrative. Maybe we could even rationalise the Sunbow cartoon as an alternate universe created by the comics' Time Wars!
