a colleague cheesed me off by casually remarking that MP screamer was a rip off due to the construction and weight. that got me thinking, how does MP3 stand up against similar quality/priced toys? i'm thinking of perfect grade gundams and high end valks here.

(i know that mosta y'all dont have mp3 yet, but i know quite a few of u buy gundam/valks)

Well 1/48 scale Yamato Valkyries are in the $130-$150 USD range, and they have very little diecast metal. The only diecast parts are the swing bar that the legs are attached to, the landing gears (with rubber tires) and the front landing gear cover. Very detailed in all modes and intricate transformation.

MP-03 pretty much sounds like the Transformers version of them. Cheaper and approx 1/60 scale though.

I keep hearing that MP Starscream is 1/60 scale.

Back when Yamato released the 1/60 VF-1's they were going for $50 to $60 a piece (sans Fast Packs of course). Not to mention the entire leg assembly was mostly die cast. I also don't think there are as many moving parts as MPS.

I'm not really sure if the Yammies had a lot of QC problems.

Yamato is synonymous with quality control problems. A first run yammie without a massive design/production flaw is a rare thing indeed, and something to be cherished.

The only similar toys in the same price range as Starscream are the 1/48s, and SS is much better value. It's nowhere near as fragile as a 1/48, has a much more intricate and complicated transformation, holds together better in both modes, comes with a stand, has panel lines, and even better stickers.

I guess it really comes down to which direction you approach it from. If you're a collector of the more adult orientated collectable toys coming out of Japan you'll probably see it as an extremely cool and well engineered toy worth every cent, but if your idea of expensive is a $40 supreme or a BAF wave of Marvel Legends you'll probably see it as a rip off.

Poorly, if you ask me- especially when I got my 1/48 Yamatos for less than US$90. The first run of Yamato's valks had problems but the QC improved after the 2nd run.

Its difficult to compare MP Screamer against Gundam toys because they're mostly fixing kits but the fact that I passed him over to buy Gundam fix and Master Grade kits speak alot! LOL!

Somehow Screamer's colour scheme, hip kibble and height (way shorter than Optimus) put me off.

    Almost the same size.

The 1/60 VF-1 is tiny compared to its predecesor.

Wow, the robot-mode makes Screamer smaller than a VF-0s in comparison. What a difference the transformation makes. Still going to wait for the inevitable repaint though.

im still keeping my fingers crossed for an updated robot mode that puts Starscream closer to his G1 bot mode. There are too many off model parts and proportions for me. I mean, couldnt they make his head/face on model?

A good indication of size. I don't think people get just how big the thing really is, all they focus on is the size of the robot. The jet would be absolutely enormous if the bot was as big as Convoy.

I've got to say, compared to a valk like that Screamer looks miles ahead. He's going to look great in my collection.

Yeah, Screamer's a well designed toy but I guess I didn't find him "value" for money. Example, I got MP Convoy for less than US$90 and he was larger, had more die-cast content.

for reference, MP3 is approx 13" tip to tip in plane mode, 9" (including intakes) in bot mode. unless he came packaged in bot mode, making him 12" would make his alt mode 16-18" in length. yikes.

the box is abt 15". standardized with mp4's packaging obviously.

I love Macross and have a few, but I think MP03 looks way more realistic and detailed.

Did the test on my gf . Showed her Roy Focker and she did'nt really say anything.Like she does with most of my figs
Showed her MP03 and she said"Holy shit it looks like a model!"

I cant really compare them though since they cover both fictional and non fictional types. The Macross feel a little more solid though and MP03 almost feels like half Toynami/half Yamato

I want that Stealth type that Cyclone posted so frikn bad! agh

Thanks for the Valkyrie comparisons Cyclone, I've been wanting to see that for a while. I think I may do a little Roy Focker/Starscream battle when I get mine.

Whoa. Just, wow. Both of those look great. Starscream is MUCH bigger in jet mode than i expected. And that Stealth Valkyrie looks amazing. I've been wanting to get that since i first saw pictures of it over sumer. And Starscream just looks better and better in every new image i see.

I'm gonna be soooo much broker than usual.:)

And suddenly, Starscream's size is put into proportion. Starscream's jet mode would have been ridiculously large if he was that additional 10-20% bigger that most people seem to want him to be. I've got the 1/60 VF-0S, and that takes up quite a significant amount of space in jet mode, and Starscream at the same scale does even moreso.
