With recent reveals in the Kreo combiners and other products, Hasbro's losing a lot of names.

    They've lost:
    Scorponok
    Predaking
    Shrapnel
    Bombshell

So my question is: How does Hasbro lose trademarks so fast? More importantly, how do they lose a name like Scorponok or Predaking?

When is the last time you saw hasbro use Predaking? Japan releases don't count.

They likely didn't lose bombshell, they most likely abandoned bombshell.

no, i think they lost it since it's a regular word. like with Jazz and Brawl. they had to put the faction names in front of those two

I believe they have to trademark the names they want to use every year or so, and actually use them. If they don't, then they lose it.

    1. They are called patent trolls, people who spend all day looking up and waiting for patent's/trademarks and the like to expire and have filled out the paper work to take over said items the day they expire. They do it looking for money from the company that owned the name, hoping they will pay to get the name back.

    2. The name is part of the public domain and they abandon it or their lawyers tell them to choose a name they can trademark.

    Alternate Spelling ≠ Lost Trademark

If anything, they're securing slight variances so other companies don't come up with suspiciously similarly-named toys.

This ^. WWE just lost the trademark to ECW, to wrestling fans, that was a 'WTF' moment. Some indy promotion in NY now owns the name and well, they are going to be running ECW shows, minus the talents and money that was involved in the original. Pretty messed up.

Honestly, that's complete bollocks. A patent troll is not someone who waits around for rights to expire so they can take them over. Neither the patent nor trademark systems work that way. An expired patent is public domain, as is an expired trademark (for the most part).

A patent troll (politely called a "nonpracticing entity") simply refers to a patent owner (usually by way of having purchased it from someone else) who does not themselves practice the patented invention and goes about suing people who do. Patent troll - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Every so often, you see people on this board go off on intellectual property when they clearly don't know enough about it. It creates misinformation that builds on itself and a fanbase that comes off as misinformed. Please don't contribute to that any further.

As to being dead, the Scorponok mark is still alive and held by Hasbro: http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/showfiel...h&a_search=Submit+Query&a_search=Submit+Query

    Predaking is dead: http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/showfield?f=doc&state=4003:more3.2.1

I didn't bother to look for the rest.

FYI, the actual packaging spells Scorponok's name correctly.

I can understand the last three, but Scorponok? His name was used as recently as the DotM Line!

Apparently it was just a misspelling at SDCC.

    Thank god.

When's the last time they used Bombshell or Shrapnel? They may have just not needed to renew the trademarks after G1 ended, and the next time they needed them the trademarks weren't available

    I'm surprised at loosing Predaking

I don't think of a robotic bug when I hear the word "bombshell" anyway. I wouldn't mind a little plastic Kate Upton though.

Really though, Bombshell and Shrapnel shouldn't be news to anyone. Those weren't the names used when the Insecticons had the TRU Re-issues a couple years back.

Last time Hasbro used "Predaking" was for Robot Heroes three years ago. Honestly surprised if that one's gone.

Hasbro seems to have lost names across several brands so even some of the GI Joe names can't be reused now.

I think it might have happened back many years ago when brands began to slow down and Hasbro wasn't exactly sure what they wanted to do with those brands. With toy lines scaled back they seem to have gotten the idea of they just didn't need all those names anymore.

I don't think anyone back then was predicting one day things like G1 and A Real American Hero would selling toys for Hasbro again.
