Keep them someplace the kids can't get to if you can (I have my own toy room) and let them have toys of their own.

I keep all my transformers in shelves in our office and my kids only touch them when I say it is ok, I started teaching them early that they are daddy's toys

I bought my nephew an Optimus Prime and he absolutely loves it. Of course, I still let him play with mine. Heck, these new ones are pretty durable and he's old enough to know how to play with them (with proper instruction of course.) He likes Classic Megatron better as a blaster than a robot :) . I've even let him play with my Alternators. Never my customs though... because I would not want him to accidentally break something I actually spent time on. Anything else... well, they're toys. In my opinion, they're meant to be played with.

In all seriousness though, I don't plan on having kids anytime soon. Y'know, still being a minor and the what not.

Luckily I don't have kids. However, I do have an older brother who just has to see every single TF toy that I bought and he has to transform them.

My advice? Keep your Transformers in a place where the kids can't get into them. Like an old trunk?

I don't stop them. They are toys. I teach them how to play with them without breaking them. I give them the odd junker to go nuts on. I keep the stuff that is really important to me up higher out of their reach.

No kids yet, but I will have some soon. The plan is a combination of what's been said before. All of them in display cases with doors to deny easy access (or at least help create the mental off-limits barrier). They'll be located in my office which will, in general be off-limits, since I plan on doing a good amount of working from home.

Second, I'll make sure to distract them with tons of transformers of their own. And third, if they really want to, I'll let them play with some of the less expensive ones supervised.

I'm not too worried. I'll make sure to keep the valuable ones on shelves they can't reach.

    You're not serious, are you?

You guys are gonna make me sound like the old man of the bunch. I have 5 kids; 17, 16, 14, 6, 4. All of them have played with my bots at one point or another. I have an entire room dedicated to my bots and it is kept under lock and key. BUT, nearly everyday, my 4 year goes in with me, picks out some bots and plays with them. If they get broke I replace them or repair the parts. The only ones he doesn't get to touch are my complete gen1 Prime and my new gen1 Shockwave, and Reflector. Those are my "other" babies.

I don't have kids, but I have a niece (6) and nephew (9). I let them mess with whatever I have that isnt G1 or G2. niece loves beast wars, along with a few RiD figures, like ultra magnus. nephew didnt like transformers until the new movie, and now he likes my movie figures, especially barricade and robo-vision prime.

I don't have kids but I do have a spare box with all kinds of TF's they are allowed to play with.

If I get kids they may play with some figures under my supervision. I'll just teach them how to use the toys and respect them as "daddy's toy" when they are old enough... I think it would be great if they'd share my interest in the figures and some day take over my collection when I'm not here any more.

I have my niece and nephew over here as I type this and I am not one bit worried about them tearing anything up or breaking anything. They get to play w/ everything that isn't G1, G2 or BT/MP. Mine even like RiD Ultra Magnus too. I wonder why that is?

I love that they can't wait to come over here and play TFs and that I can trust them. It's really great to be able to share this w/ them.

Well, I don't have kids nor do I plan on having any for awhile. However, I DO have a kitten, and I live in an apartment...and she's confined to my bedroom until she's full grown. So, it definitely is a chore teaching her not to play with my toys. I've got the small robot heroes on the windowsill like a foot above my bed where she can easily reach them. She hasn't even tried to touch them in the month that they've been there.

Kittens are essentially like babies, only they're fuzzy and a lot harder to keep away from your toys...those crafty little sneaks. But if I can teach my kitten not to touch, it shouldn't be hard with a kid. But play it safe. If you have it, put them on display in an extra room or put them on shelves too high for them to get to. Look at it like baby-proofing a house - only you're actually baby-proofing your TFs.

Since me an my fiance are both collectors (she collects vintage fisherprice little people sets and Barbies) we had this discussion and we both concluded this:

During the early years, that stuff will be locked up like fort knox.

When they are a bit older, we will introduce our kids to the idea collecting and educate them in it. For example, if little "johnny" wants a spiderman figure, we'll ask him if he really likes it, would he like to have 2. If he does, we'll purchase 2 for him and explain he can open one and "save" the other. The saved toy we'll place in his own shelf in our collection room. He can choose later if he wants to open it or not. Of course we also explain you cant touch our stuff without permission.

As well if there is a toy in our collections he/she likes, I would let him/her play with it under supervision. If I find he/she gravitates towards a specific toy, we'll head to ebay and buy them one of their own or give it to them if we don't mind parting with it.

just a rough concept, we'll see if it will work when we have kids down the road.
