I usually go with my initial impression based on seeing a decent set of pictures or actually looking at one in a store. Popular forum opinions don't influence me in the slightest and if I decide something isn't worth my money then there's little chance of me doing a U-turn.

Exactly This. I check out reviews of figures im interested in, but sometimes i see something in person and i buy it just because im curious.
This is pretty much mine also. I don't open mine so as long as i like the character and it looks cool ill get it.
I generaly like the biggest TFs i can get. I only bought rotf Soundwave because... well he's Soundwave. I also look for good poseability. Soon I'll just be buying all I can get my hands on for a huge MISB collection.
