At first they are hatchlings but how exactly do they grow?
They are robotic organisms but their metal isn't exactly earth metal but alien cybertonian metal. I don't think it's the same thing. Do they have some kind of metal skin that grows like an human organism or do they keep upgrading with parts?

I ask this because I first thought of this when in DOTM Megatron fed whatever it was to the little hatchlings like they were little growing organisms.

They aren't really made of metal, it is metallic but not actually metal. They're technically not robots or machines, they're living, growing, organisms. They talked about Scorponok's tail in the first movie, I believe they mentioned how it was "healing" or something. So they have flesh, while very similar to metal, it's not quite.

In addition, they also seem to have blood of some sort. This is most prevalent when Grindor's face is being split apart and when the Dreads were being killed, with red fluid spewing out onto the road. And let's not forget the constant spitting, such as with Jetfire and Starscream.

 

That's all lubricant and oil, which simulates robotic "blood" and "saliva"...energon has been stated to be the lifeblood of the transformers.

 

yea and the green goo looking stuff on ravage's spine when that monster bumblebee killed him along with igor had spit some too bc he was slobbering everywhere and when Laserbeak was close up when he was talking you could see some kinda fluid in his mouth
