How do they decide a character's repaint color scheme?

As I relax and think about things, I look at my Recon Ironhide. His weapons are really awesome and they are the reason I bought this bad boy. But I look at him and darn it, those lightning stripes are ugly as a yard full of weeds. Some tribal graphics as bad as they are would have been better. I just don't understand how they look at a drawing in a computer and say, "Yup! that's exactly what we're looking for!".

I understand that Ironhide has had two black versions and a grey version already, but even a camo paint job would have been cooler. Or even an army green scheme.

Don't get me wrong. I love some of the repaints. Elite Guard Bumblebee is fantastic along with Shadow Command Megatron and Universe 2.0 Starscream. Look at the colors on Shadow Command Megatron, they just accentuate how cool this mold look. And the silver parts actually look metal. This is how character repaints are supposed to be done.

Or a red one. Not that that'd make sense or anything...

Yeah, I was just playing off the fact that he is in the jungle hunting for Bludgeon.

Sounds like a good question to ask Hasbro next question period.

Hasbro TF decision-maker 1: "What's the laziest repaint we could do to this figure?"

    Hasbro TF decision-maker 2: "Battle-damage?"

Hasbro TF decision-maker 1: "Nah, that'll take too much grey paint. Even lazier than that..."

Hasbro TF decision-maker 2: "How about some pointless racing-stripe?"

Hasbro TF decision-maker 1: "Great Idea! I can see a promotion in your future..."

Hasbro's repaint checklist after a character and mold have been selected:

Has the mold been released in black? If no, repaint black. If yes, proceed to next question.

Has the mold been released in the character's G1 colors? If no, repaint as G1. If yes, proceed.

Has the mold been released in the G1 colors of any other remotely similar character? If no, repaint as the G1 version of a remotely similar character. If yes, proceed.

Has the mold been released in a premium version with two details the original deco missed and minus one detail the original had (or plus one error the original lacked)? If no, do that. If yes, proceed.

Has the mold been released with battle damage? If no, release with battle damage. If yes, proceed.

Repaint the mold primarily yellow with black highlights and call it "(insert random adjective here) Bumblebee."

Especially with ROTF, the trend has been "repaint it so it still looks mostly the same" (go check all them Deluxe Bumblebee toys that are yellow with somewhat different black stripes for verification). It's done so the retailers think they keep getting new toys, and Hasbro keeps a Bumblebee or Optimus or Ironhide on the shelves, and kids and moms aren't confused by some well-known character being a whole different color (or name!)

what are the white streaks supposed to look like?
I agree... camo, or red would be much better...
Perhaps a metallic red "premium" for the 3rd movie?
Speaking of repaints... how can you repaint a mold of bumblebee red with the same head and call him cliffjumper, but you repaint a barricade including his head (stealth bumblebee still had a yellow head) and still call him barricade?
I'm glad they decided to retool the heads for the rotf line...
Speaking of retooled repaints they really should make a blue version of the battle(?) sideswipe (with a new head of course) and call it tracks... not getting a new sideswipe, but I will get that!

Obviously, Recon Ironhide is hunting Bludgeon during a thunderstorm. The white streaks are supposed to help him blend in with the lightning.

Looks like Jungle camo to me...

Due to dense Jungle canopies, they're actually generally quite dark. The jagged white stripes then blend with the random patches of light scattered throughout the underbrush.

Looks pretty much like Ironhide with war paint.

Seriously, the way some of these are released, they are just lazy, have lost creativity, or just don't care.

EDIT: thinking about it now, Ironhide and Nebular Starscream should've switched paint jobs.

Without Ironhide actually taking the time to get a full-body repaint, I think it works quite well.

I'm not exactly sure what colours are on him that aren't natural. He's a mottling of light and shadow, which is pretty much what the jungle floor is.

I'd like to know what the Hell Hasbro was going for when they released that ugly "Defender Optimus Prime" to be Mindwipe's wavemate. It doesn't look like anything appealing to me.

Actually, the original name was supposed to be "Shelf Defender Optimus Prime." The previous wave was supposed to include "Shelf Recon Ironhide." These were supposed to patrol against Universe Voyager "Decepticon ClogShelf" (the indirect-sunlight-yellowed-with-ugly-brown Cybertron Defense Scattorshot redeco). Unfortunately, "Shelf" was not available due to trademark reasons and so the link of these three toys across two lines was lost. [/lies]
