China and Japan haven't always had the friendliest of relations, so I'm wondering how depicting Drift as a samurai will affect audience reactions in China.

Any of the readers in Asia have a first-hand view on this?

Didn't Japan under the age of the Samurais fight among each others?

Yes and drift being a Japanese design is why I was adamant to others that he is not the TF that speaks Mandarin. The Chinese viewers will have their own Mandarin speaking TF.

But that's ok because true ninja also came from Japan. I don't understand why some think the Ninja is a Chinese product?

He's asking will Chinese people appreciate the Chinese robot being modeled after a Japanese samurai figure

I think it makes no sense if they were going to make him so specific, but for an international audience most people don't know the difference between China and Japan they just think the whole area is the same.

Not to say that I know everything but there are drastically different cultural and linguistic differences between every country and even local areas in Asia just like every other place in the world.

Trust me, for the most part, almost everyone knows the difference between China and Japan. Individual (un-educated) people may not know the difference, but people as a whole know the difference lol.

Well, there was this article on Kotaku by Brian Ashcroft about people being offended when Katy Perry used Japanese prints on what appeared to be a Chinese dress...

This melding of Chinese and Japanese culture as if they were one monolith seems incredibly common in the West, and if you are familiar with the culture differences throughout Asia, it's something you certainly notice.

But, as someone who lives in Japan, I see a similar mix and matching with Western culture all the time as well as seemingly endless appropriation of foreign cultures for entertainment purposes. That doesn't make it right or okay, but it shows that this isn't only an American thing or a white thing or whatever.

I swear, I only go to that site to read about the video games...

An interesting question since there isn't much love between Japan and China.

Not a recent thing either since it goes back a long ways. China is still upset over events in World War II like the Rape of Nanking but Japan tends to not acknowledge atrocities committed during the war. Post war the nations did not get along because the Chinese were communist while Japan allied with the United States. In the current state of affairs there is heavy debate over who owns what islands and if Chinese naval build up is a threat to Japan.

But I don't know how things go in entertainment because I honestly don't know what gets imported into China from places like Japan. It could be a case of don't like Japan but willing to ignore it for a movie. Although in the Chinese films they do like to make the Japanese out to be the bad guys. Hum so maybe that means Chinese viewers will pull of the Decepticons and now there will be a lot more Decepticon fans.

Well it would be a problem if drift looked like a ww2 japanese soldier.
The Samurai look dont have a lot to do with that part of japanese history. And I dont think that a samurai uniform symbolises japanese atrocities towards the chinese people.

    Look at our own history.
Ww1 german uniforms not that bad
    Ww2 uniforms : evil.

Its headquarters are in France, but it's part of Volkswagen now. So modern Bugattis are actually French and German in a way.

The general american audience will view everything remotely Asian as being all the same. It's the same with Ireland, the UK and Europe, generally Americans think they're all one in the same, Ireland is NOT part of the UK, or that Ireland is part of a state in America (actually said to me by an American) when in reality they're all very very different and separate from one another.
