Since Autoboot Camp has shown Autobots being assigned codenames by their drill sergeant, I'm curious to know how Jazz got his. It's not as if the music style is part of Cybertronian culture. Anyone care to hazard a guess?

Maybe they have jazz on other planets, too. Jazz's DI might have stopped by the Mos Eisley cantina at one point.

I'm more interested in knowing how much one had to be a suckup to get the name Optimus.

Also think about the fact that Jazz is probably hundreds if not thousands of years old.

Maybe in an alternate time line. The bot we know as Jazz came to Earth and thought jazz was so awesome that he went back in time to when he was named and changed it?
Thus creating the timeline our animated universe follows.

His real name is unpronounceable in English, so just call him Jazz.

    Please don't.

Maybe Jazz was actually built around the time jazz was popular. Earth was probably the number 1 major "Forbidden" organic planets. Jazz sent a probe for some research and thought the music was snazzy.

I've always assumed that when Transformers arrive on Earth (in whatever fiction), they assimilate whatever language they're going to use (normally English) and their names and accents are translated into the closest Earth equivalents. This also explains why characters like Outback and Ironhide can have Earth regional accents.

His true name is so long that the mere utterance of it would drive you insane, so much to the point that your head would explode!

Perhaps 'jazz' means something else in Cybertronian. Or maybe we're all pronouncing it wrong and his name is actually 'Yass' or something. Audio 'cloud watching' on our part. :)

    Ah, happy days. :)

His real name is just a vowel swap away but was considered to be too inappropriate on Earth.

This is a serious matter. We must establish a reason for the name other than the toy designers deciding to go a G1 Jazz homage.

Rubbish! He'd have got on fine with Slag, Slapper, Erector, Windbreaker, etc.
