Any possibility a transformer maybe too badly damaged to be repaired but put into "storage" or "suspended animation". Maybe for repairs in the future with improved technology or the return of the Allspark?
Maybe the memory records of a "dead" bot can be recorded or saved for future re-use?

Got to wait until the second movie comes out to know for sure since the first film wrapped up shortly after the death of several robots.

Comic books and cartoons have found ways around the little problem of death but no word yet if the live action franchise will find a way to put question marks on death or if dead is just the plain old boring sort of dead.

I think their going for dead is dead. If the spark is gone their dead dead. Ala Jazz. Can't see it very well but his chest is caved in, his spark is gone/extinguished thus whats left is an empty shell.

Actually, I meant if the TFs usually make a backup of their hard drives.

If you follow the expanded TF universe a TF has 3 parts:

    1. A Spark
    2. Memory Data tracks
    3. A Body

BT Prowl said that the Autobots had Prowls Datatracks but lost his Spark. If they were able to get his spark back prowl would be restored whole. THis is also what happened in BW where Primal died, but Rhinox had a blank protoform (body) and his datatracks so all he needed was his original spark. Also, G1 combaticons, they had the Spark and Datatracks but no body. I guess that is TF prison.

This is also why TFs can 'die' but be brought back and have a similar personality but no memories. The Personality is from the spark, the experiences are from the Datatracks.

In TF the movie when the shuttle went down, they lost all 3, body, spark and datatracks, so those TFs were very dead.

For Jazz, I dunno, they didn't go too deep into sparks and such. I am sure they could bring him back if they could regain his spark.

Long story short: Apparently TFs don't back up personalities frequently because most universes they have very little ability to naviage the allspark to retrieve specific sparks. So when a TF dies, they die because they don't know enough to be able to restore them.

That is a good post by nkelsch.

To add on: The Transformers aren't just robots - they're living organisms. They're not just computers either. They consist of more than just a processor, motherboard and some RAM.

Like us, as sophisticated, multi-cellular organisms they would many many organs, not just the spark chamber, brain or processor, and limbs.

Yea but that makes them a bit boring to be just big metal people. It would make them a bit more alien if the life and death rules for them where some how different than it is for us.

Or maybe I just got spoiled with plot ideas like status lock in Beast Wars or the question in Animated of what it would take to actually kill a Transformer since you can be down to just a head and still get by.

Guess there is just something in us that wants some characters that can't be killed by the run of the mill stuff that can kill us in real life. In modern times we came up with things like Superman to fill in that need but it goes back way farther than that because just look at the Greek Gods.

    Transformers: living organism?
    Are you serious?!
They're not cyborgs. They are pure robots.
Here we go again with the stupid theory that TFs are almost like us people.
An artificial intelligence, even if smarter than us, is still artificial.
If Ratchet could do a backup of Optimus system memory, he could install an identical copy of Prime on another endoskeleton.
Problem is recreating a new body outside of Cybertron.

They ARE living organisms. Organisms does only mean cyborgs or carbon-based life. :rolleyes2

"Autonomous robotic organisms" ringing any bells?

    That line is fictional.
I don't understand why you defend so strongly to have the TFs so human-like.
    For you, they must:
    - talk like humans
    - move like humans
    - die like humans
Can't they just be stealth robots? It would make them feel more realistic.

Everything in Transformers is fictional. Transformers are fictional. :rolleyes2

Wait a minute - you DON'T want Transformer that talk, move or die like humans? So they should speak in Cybertronian all the time, have 6 legs and crawl along the ground, and vaporize when they die. Transformers have ALWAYS been human-like. They have a head, bipedal form of 2 legs and 2 arms. I don't know any Transformer that doesn't move like a human while in robot mode. As highly sophisticated creatures with sentience and a large body, it would make sense to have more than just simple "battery and computer" aka spark and brain.

ALL living creatures have more than that. Even ants have more than just a heart and a brain. They have glands and rectum etc. It would make sense that a Transformer would have more than a spark chamber and processing unit. An energy absorbtion unit? An internal cooling system? A nervous system? This is the movie-verse. It's already established this isn't like Beast Wars or any other cartoon series - Transformer WILL die and they're not as tolerant as to survive being blown to tiny little bits. This more realistic approach can be rationalized if movie-verse Transformers aren't that simple and are very complex like a real multi-cellular organism should.

And what do you even mean by 'stealth robots'?

Typo: Organisms does *not* only mean cyborgs or carbon-based life

I find that transformers are generally only as dead as the writer wants them to be. Anything from 'dead is dead' to 'easily restored' and between is possible in the TF universe, just depends on how the particular writer feels.

And once again, I must point out that it's the human qualities of TF characters that have made them so enduringly popular and able to inspire 20+ years of devotion from their fans.

Yep... see: TF the movie's Prime dies from severe wounds, while Ultra Magnus (who was blown to PIECES) is put back together in minutes and better than ever! That's just ludicris, BUT it's what serves the story needing to be told... I think.

They've always been living sentient organisms. They're essentially mechanical organisms. Secondly they're not artifical.

    This.

True. Transformers have every characteristic of a human, the only two differences are. They're mechanical and they can turn into vehicles, plus they can do even more than humans can do. They have internal organs similar to ours, they are humanoid beings. Why can't some people just accept that fact?

I look at it this way. Transformers is a comic/cartoon based movie. Just like Spiderman, X-men or the Hulk, etc.
In other words death is merely an inconvenience.
Prof X is still alive, so is Doc Oc and Venom, and most likely so is Jazz ,Megatron, Brawl, and all of the gang.
