I mean it's fricken huge with the claws and all,it's armed to the gills with torpedoes and yeah it's 5 hundred years from now till it gets built but still all it really needs is engineiring, the bridge, cabins and a storage area for the drill. this is the romulan mining ship from star trek 09

well the Romulans are a very war like race pretty much the opposites of the Vulcans although they pretty much the same race but with polar opposite ways of life so it makes some sense they would go a bit over the top and arm even something as mundane as a mining vessel to the teeth I have not seen the movie so its hard for me to know if this one may have been modified for a special purpose

If you read the Comic prequel to the film (Star Trek Countdown) it actually details the relationship between Spock and Nero. I'd recommend reading the collected series, its in a TPB and was written by the film writers, so its actually canon. Here's a synopsis.

    Spoilers ahead.

The story shows that Neros ship is a normal basic mining vessel, but after Romulus' destruction he actually finds his way to a secret Romulan weapons depot, which has a load of technology which is Borg and Dominion derived.

Nero then takes this weaponry (with the base commanders blessing, because she too wants revenge for the destruction of Romulus), upgrades his ship and giant spidery badass time travelling spaceships ahoy!

I don't think a ship, or a car or boat or unicorns makes a movie cool.
those things are, in themselves, cool.
I love the '66 TV series Batmobile, but the show was not improved by its coolness.
Or the main spaceship in The Black Hole was awesome, but didn't save the movie from
its flaws. Well, it DID contribute a LOT to the atmosphere of the film.

Personally, i think Abrams just told the FX crews, "go nutz" and they tried too hard to make a badass "wessel" and we got the Assteroid from Armageddeon.

I thought the Narada was pretty cool looking and serves as a nice contrast to the USS Enterprise with all the spikes, weapons, and what not.

Actually, the prequel "Countdown" comic was written by Mike Johnson and Tim Jones, not the movie writers. Although the movie writers were involved with the sequel to "Countdown" called "Nero", which takes places during the 25 year gap Nero's crew was waiting for Spock to arrive from the future.

As for whether or not the comic is canon, who wrote it really doesn't make it canon. In fact, Robert Orici himself said in a Q&A that the comic is not canon to explain certain discrepancies between it and the movie (albeit with a question mark).

Hopefully their toilets don't share the spiky motif!
