I remember reading this week of strips back when I was a kid. They really wigged me out back then. Now I just view it as probably the last imaginative thing that happened in Garfield.

I've never understood the point of that 'nightmare episode'.

I know its popular to slam jim davis but growing up i loooooooved garfield (i had a garfield hand puppet plushie!) and this was prolly the coolest thing he ever did. Sure as far as trying be meta its kinda contrived but it took balls to do something like that to something as popular as garfield. Im sure jim received some distressed fan letters from some poor saps who own their little garfield shrines.

I remember that storyline from way back. Realizing after the event that every subsequent storyline might have happened only in poor Garfield's imagination left me with a heavy heart.

Jim Davis just wanted to see if he could do something scary.

Ah yes, the other side of the "Garfield without Garfield" universe.

It's funny, I saw the title of the thread, and realized exactly which storyline you were referring to.

IMO, it's Jim Davis' best work (along with the Garfield Pet Force novels- it would be Garfield and Friends, but he wasn't really involved with that).

The story I heard behind the strip is that Garfield is dying and its his transition to heaven, hence everyone or thing he loved being there. The lonelyness angles was the subtle way of saying we are all alone when we die. Its a sad a depressing take on it. :(

Yeah, I remember first reading this arc. It is one of the strips I find most potent and thought-provoking in the history of Garfield, though I guess that isn't really saying much. Still, I like its implications and the fact that it is pretty morbid.
