Has anyone tried this? It wasn't that hard to do, though the springs in the fins were a pain.

I was surprised how well it actually worked. The clear yellow plastic works perfectly with the gold paint on Excellion and the blue works great with Hot Shot.

Now the Hot Rod homage is complete.

I have already planned on doing this when I get him. It is nice to see how it looks ahead of time though. Thanks.

I was actually going to post a question about this. Can anyone do a step-by-step on how to do this? I've heard conflicting points on whether it's easy or hard to do, mainly because of the springs...

4 screws need to be removed to take it apart. The hardest thing is lining up the springs to the notches in the wings and the body. The best method is to put the wing on and then drop the spring in and move it around. After that, just be careful screwing it back together so the springs dont pop back out.

I see 6 screws total in the backpack assembly, two on top, four on the bottom, which 4 am I dealing with? (I don't want to take it apart until I get a Hot Shot to mess around with. I don't want to risk ruining my Excellion if this is beyond my abilities.)

It's such a basic mod, too. I'm surprised they didn't just leave the yellow fins in the repaint. I guess they felt everything had to be different in one shade or another.

The two screws on the top, the two on the bottom at the tips and the one in the center under the hole for his gun's peg in car mode.

As for why they didn't make the fins yellow to begin with, Hot Rod's windshield is blue, and since that and the wings are on the same piece of plastic in the factory, they had to change both or none. I guess they figured since the wings were retractable that they wouldn't be too noticed, while the yellow canopy would be.

I'm most likely going to try that when I get Excillion, nice to hear it's not crazy hard to pull off.

Actually...the blue windows fit on Excellion. Especially if you're going for a Hot Rod motif. (they were blue windows in TF:TM)

Nice modifications. Too bad I'm not interested in buying him.

You know... That makes so much sense that I now feel so stupid for not seeing it before hand... I was so focused on color coordinating the damned thing that I missed the obvious... :p

I'm gonna do that, I got excillion today... and then I'll paint the chest and waist's blue parts a red if I can find a good one, and paint the guns on his forearms silver.

I already tested with a modification on a blue Hot Shot with the intention of doing it to Excillion. Not only am I going to trade out the wings, but his force chip gimmick is going bye-bye as well. :D

I just did mine. Pretty easy really, just tricky with the springs. I suggest popping the legs off first so you have more room to work. He looks really good now. I want to get some silver paint and do the arm pipes on both of them, maybe touch up Excellion a tiny bit.
