Can anyone tell me though why in recent years, Hot Rod/Rodimus suddenly has yellow horns? I first saw them in IDW's Animated movie adaption, though they were magenta and they looked terrible. Why did they do this?

As a feature it came in with Energon Rodimus, probably because he didn't have his spoiler in that version and Hasbro wanted to keep the yellow wings in some way, and it stuck after that?

Honestly I'm not sure on the reasoning. Only that it can be traced back to the Energon and was probably kept for the sake of familiarity and design continuity.

I can't believe I'd forgotten Energon Rodimus, my favourite TF from that era. I can live with the recent toys, it was the magenta ones in the Movie comics that really put me off. They just seem so wrong, especially the way they protrude.

Haha, it was your avatar I was using as a reference to work out about the whole lack of spoiler on the back too!

From what I've seen, the 'horns' started out as a surface detail, as seen in Josh's screen grab and the original toy, and later artists and toy designers (Don F. seemed to be good for this) accentuated that detail into a raised Prowl-like crest, each building on the previous until you get things like the Hawkeye face-frame on Animated Rodimus.

It kind of irritated me how Checkpoint looked like Prowl due to having the same crest and colors, but Prowl had already been cast as some weird little F1.

It irritated me so bad, I put that head on a RID Prowl. Looked good.

Don't really know the answer but I guess Sol Fury's reply seems like a reasonable suggestion to that.

I haven't thought of them as "Horns" but I do agree with you that several incarnations of Hot Rod and/or successor's have these design feature become more apparent.

I'd prefer Hot Rod without sticky-out non-yellow horns and Rodimus Prime with them all pointy and yellow, like becoming a Prime gave him some kind of crown.
Mostly though I think it was done to make his dome head a bit more interesting and then they just grew and a nice extra colour always makes sticky-out bits more interesting. One of those design evolutions that doesn't know when to stop. Soon he'll have huge pointy Batman ears, which TFA Rodimus is getting close to.

I just hated the way they looked in the IDW comics. Not the colours, just the way they protruded. I grew up on the film and they just look so wrong in the book. It really puts me off reading the books. Don't know why it bothers me so much but it does.

I do find it funny how you were reminded by my avatar. suppose I'm so used to looking at it, it didn't even register.

I love Checkpoint. He's how I feel Prowl would look as a Prime. Wonder what his name would be? Prime Logic?

The "vestigial spoiler" idea never occurred to me. That's interesting. I kinda figured designers started accentuating the horns to make his head design a bit more dynamic and possibly noble (as the horns are kind of crown-like). Since his original head design was more subtle and rounded, maybe the designers just felt compelled to accentuate a few features.

Although, I gotta say, I prefer my Hot Rod with only subtle horns, not an actual raised crest. Just because he starts looking too much like Prowl and the other Nissan-bots.

If only the toy had looked half as awesome as that artwork.
