Anyone planning on watching this movie??? I'm curious, but normally movies full of glorified gore don't sit well with me so I'm not sure if I want to spend the money to go watch it...

But I do like Tarantino films, which is why I'm curious...

This is not a Tarantino film. This is an Eli Roth film. Tarantino just threw his name behind it to get the guy some recognition. Nothing more.

That said, I was a very big fan of Roth's first film, Cabin Fever. Everything I have read and heard about Hostel is very positive. It's getting great reviews from Horror fans and mainstream critics, something incredebly rare for a horror flick.

It's also not "torture porn" (what you were alluding to) according to my main movie man Devin.

Cabin Fever was awesome. The kid from Boy Meets World and the Jock-guy had me laughing so hard.

Then again, 100% of "horror" movies make me laugh hysterically.

    Ditto on the first part.

Massive disagreement with the second. Cabin Fever sucked..hard. The grisly effects were good; the premise was good, but the execution was just horrible. I'd rate it just below Wrong Turn on the suck-o-meter.
First time I saw the trailer for Hostel, I was :peoples:  Then I saw it was written and directed by Eli Roth, and went   I'll wait for cable, maaaybe a renter.

And how much of that is because Tarantino's name was stuck in front of it?

Devin's review (see link above) doesn't even mention Tarantino.

The only familiarity I have with this movie is from the commercials for it. It looks nothing more than people torturing other people. That's just sick to me. Why would I want to watch that?

Exactly my thoughts. I just can't seem to understand the mentallity of people when they actually want to watch something like this.

Definitely going to pass on this one. Besides the fact it doesn't really seem to have a plot, judging by the previews, I refuse to watch anything that is evenly remotely connected to Quentin Tarantino.

What's wrong with taking pleasure in the pain of others?

    Nope.
This movie has been anticipated by hardcore horror fans (i.e. people like me) for a couple years now. All Tarantino did was basically say to Roth "Dude, this is a great concept! I'll produce it!". Its totally written and directed by Eli Roth.

And while you didn't like Cabin fever, the movie was a HUGE hit in the horror fandom, which is why people are anticipating this movie. Not because Tarantino decided to slap his name on it.

Honestly I would say if you are just a Tarantino fan, you will miss the point. If you are a fan of Takashi Miike's films, then this might be more your style. Its not "quirky horror" like Cabin Fever, its supposed to be "naked chicks with lots of brutal gore horror". Don't like that style? Save your dough. :D

I have been waiting for this since I walked out of Cabin Fever, so I'm definitely seeing it. Can't wait!

I'm thinking similar thoughts. See I'm not a fan of horror that could actually happen. I likes teh supernatural/mutant/science/alien/unknown origin/etc monsters.

Nothing as long as it's not gory sick shit. The way comedy movies make humour out of pain of the main character, wether it be physical or mental pain is funny.
Totally agree. It's not difficult to imagine that there might be real sick minded people in the world that do these things wether they be in the present or past events. Same for the "based on a true story" movies, the thought of these things actually having happened in the past is spine tingling.

But then again I'm not a fan of horror movies in the first place, I just like posting. :D

    And? Other reviewers have.

I like Tarantino, but didn't like Kill Bill. I like horror movies, but wanted my fucking money back after Cabin Fever.
I understand the difference between producer and writer/director, thanks. I simply implied that some positive reviews, particularly those that name-drop Tarantino, might have a little more to do with their golden-boy's involvement (i.e., he thought this was a good idea; he must be right) than Roth's resume, which is less than stellar.

You made it sound like everyone that gave it a positive review did it based on Tarantino's name. I gave you an example contrary to this position.
