depends on the laptop you might need that.

mines has a s-video out...so i just use that and connect to my tv s-video....while i use the laptop headphone jack to connect to the tv with a y-split audio cable

that cable...yeah, you can connect it to either composite ot s-video.

to connect sound, your going to have to use the laptop jack like i did....or just use the sound off the laptop.

^ This. Most laptops today (at least moderate priced ones $550.00+) have a S-Video port. In fact, it's one of the things I looked for when I bought mine. I have HD out in the living room, so I can connect it using the VGA, but in my room I have an old (OLD) tube set, so I needed something that would connect to this old beast. (I ended up having to buy a converter that takes Composite/S-Video and turned it into coax though...)

Look at all of the laptop options before you go and buy a possibly needless accessory that'll just cost you more money than you're hoping to pay.

The audio is no problem. I already have an audio Y splitter cable from my other laptop that broke so no problems there.

Finding a laptop with a S-video port though might be hard. I have looked at a few of them, and haven't seen any that have it.

With that adapter thing, I can just plug my audio splitter cable into it right?

I mostly want to hook up my laptop to the TV for playing games on. I didn't watch any movies with my old laptop, but might have to once I get a new one

Where are you planning on buying this laptop?
Wal*Mart? (I can tell you that Acers, Gateways, HPs, Toshibas all have S-Video ports. Compaqs and some Dells do not.)
Best Buy? (Acer, Asus, eMachines, Gateways, HP, Toshiba all have at least one model with a S-Video port.)

Though I would recommend you stay away from Acer/Gateway/eMachines (all one company now), and Dell.

Acer's been junk for a long time. Gateway started being junk about 5 or so years ago. eMachines was iffy from the get go. Mine was reliable, but I've heard plenty of horror stories from other folks, so ymmv.

Dells have given me one too many problems to offer any positive feedback for their product. My cousin's desktop has ruined two DVD-RWs (both Sata), her desktop before that would overheat (loose heatsink), my friend's desktop also had the heatsink problem, and when I called tech support on all of those problems, it was just a nightmare.

HPs are reliable. Toshibas are definitely reliable. I'd even recommend a Sony over the other competition mentioned above.

Got it. I thought the yellow one might have been an audio jack. What's it used for?

Also, I'm planning on getting a laptop from tigerdirect. If anyone knows of any on the site (going to get it at the store though) that has a S-video and is under $400, let me know

Is there anything specific I should look for, or should all new laptop have the ability to hook up with a TV with that S-video adapter thing? I went to check out some laptops today, and none of them has S-video ports
