...DC Comics character Orion, son of Darkseid! I thought there was something familiar about Power Core Combiners Windburn when it was first released. Can't believe it took me this long to figure out. It finally hit me today when I saw it on clearance at Walmart and took a good look at it.

And since Windburn is a redeco of Searchlight, I'm fairly certain the Orion homage is intentional. Why else would it be so strikingly similar? And that helmet redeco takes the cake!

The resemblance is uncanny as the X-Men! (that's a comics joke, folks)

    Darkray = Darkseid + Lightray?

    Windburn's personality also reflects Orion's.

Wow! I'm amazed at how much this intrigues me given that I've read maybe 10 comics in my life! And none of them had this guy in it! My brain says I should recognise this guy because he was more than likely mentioned in an ep of Atop The Fourth Wall, but even if he hasn't, I always love non-TF homages in TF toys.

Damn i did not know that.

I still won't but it because i'm not much of a DC fan and I really don't like the mold much.

Well, dang! I didn't catch that. That's enough evidence for me to confirm it's intentional.

I also noticed someone named "Nevermore" just added a note to Windburn's page related to this on the TFWiki. What a freaking amazing coincidence! :thumb

I did some digging via Google before posting this and have to give props to "Master Fwiffo" for being the first to notice this via allspark.com (on July 9, 2010). Found a few others who pointed it out via seibertron.com, tformers.com and some fan forum called "Transformers Fans (In Name Only)," but every time their comments were buried in threads and I don't guess anyone cared enough about it to spread the word around.

Not sure why no one did a full photo comparison until now. Maybe because so many fans dismissed the PCC toyline altogether? I dunno, but I think it's pretty danged cool, especially to make an homage to a Jack Kirby creation out of a transforming robot/helicopter. Whomever the Hasbro designer was who sneaked this one in, kudos to you! It was a little stroke of genius and a nice tribute to a legend.

Well, he did appear in two episodes of the Justice League TV series:

    - "Twilight (Of The Gods)" - in Season 2, ep numbers 27-28
    - "Flash and Substance" - in Season 2, ep #31

The episode screencap and action figure pic I uploaded in my original post are based on a Bruce Timm design of Jack Kirby's original version of Orion that appeared in the comics.

NICE! I was going to be picking up a bunch of clearance PCCs tomorrow anyway, nice to know this guy can go live in my "Comics" section and hang with the DC dudes ;)

    Which I've never seen.

I'm just friggin' useless, ain't I? Well, at least I can appreciate the homage despite not being familiar with the source. Better than going "WHO THE FUCK IS ORION WHY SHOULD I CARE WARGLE FARGLE BLARGLE", after all. Not that I've seen anyone do such a thing, but this is the Internet.

I'm the same way sometimes. The fact that HftD Backfire looks quite similar to a Kamen Rider bike only heightens my liking of the toy, despite not being all that into Kamen Rider (at least not yet :) ).

EDIT: BTW, go see Justice League.

Nevermore is a member here

As you've stated, there's certainly enough here to make a valid case for something like this. I wonder what Hasbro would say. Perhaps, this would be just the kind of question to ask them :D

I'd assume he's aware of that, what with him replying to a post of mine and all.

Yup. I guess my tongue-in-cheeky comment was too subtle.

Nevermore is a walking human Transformers encyclopedia.

    There. That wasn't so subtle.

QFT. Justice League is the most epic superhero series in all of animation history.
