I'll try to keep this short...

My stepdad closed his business of over 20 years a few years ago. Apparently he found a TF they meant to give me as a kid. My mom told my wife they planned to give to me for xmas then lost it.

Friday my Mom finally fessed up and said they had what she thought was a sealed Optimus in their shed and initially said they planned to sell it. She finally decided to give it to me and if I sold it, I had to split the money with her. Cool.

She called this morning, it's not Optimus.....It's FREAKING TRYPTICON!! :rock

Needless to say, I don't plan on ever selling it, my question is...

Am I totally crazy to open it?

    Too late, I opened it.

I can't speak for others, or what you should do, but I wouldn't be able to enjoy it at all if I didn't open it and play with it. If you never plan on getting rid of it, then why leave it sealed?

Awesome story by the way. :)

Am I totally crazy for not understanding the story you're trying to tell us?

Regardless of which toy you get\got, open it up. It's not doing anybody any good staying sealed.

I'm sure that tons o' people will disagree with me, but if it was me I'd open it. I'd be as careful as a surgeon and have someone dabbing the sweat off my head with a rag while handing my scalpels and hemostats, but I'd open it.

I guess my best advice would be this: if you're looking at it as an investment, keep it closed. However, if you're looking at it as something that brings you joy when you look at it or as something your folks got you to enjoy because they love you, open it and enjoy it.

Open him and display him with the box. They'll look good together. :D

    QFT.

Now, the real quesion is this: do you collect for bragging rights and resale value or do you collect for the joy of it and playing with your toys?

    That should answer your question.

Sounds like you guys think like I do. I don't see it as an investment so I will likely open nicely so the box is still okay and check that bad boy out.

    NICE
What shape is the box in?

Trypticon is on my Ebay Christmas list this year. Picked up Omega Supreme last year. I get 1 transformer a year. Well, that's what the wife allows anyway :D

    1- Fortress Maximus
    2- Omega Supreme
3- Trypticon (bonus is MP Grimlock. Don't ask how I slid that one in there)
4- Not sure next year. Maybe Scorponok

Well I'm a MISBer so you know what I'm gonna say :D  HOWEVER if you're gonna open it I'd do 2 things!:

    a) Open it damn carefully, slice the tape, so you don't damage the box
    b) Don't put on the stickers. If you want to sticker it, use Reprolabels, but keep the sticker sheet in original condition :)  That way if you want to sell it further down the line then you've maximised the value of an opened toy.

At any rate, I wish my parents found stuff like that :D

You could sell Trypticon, split the money and still have enough money left over for a loose Trypticon and a few other Transformers.

    Sealed Trypticon

^If a sealed Trypticon actually sold for that much, you'd be right. The only one close to sealed that sold went for $340. A sealed one would probably fetch an additional $100 or so.

I say open it and enjoy it, but as Locustreign suggested, if you do want to put stickers on it, go with a set from Reprolabels and leave the original sheet alone.

Thats a pretty cool story! Man, that reminds me that I need to hollar at my cousin (richly spoiled as a kid with all the newest cool kids toys/games... but now is a gangsta that is too serious and grown to play with toys) Im betting he might just have a full G1 collection in his attic (amoung other, more GAANGSTA things, lol)!

That's a great story. Act like the eight-year-old you were and open him. And cover him in Stunticons and Combaticons too!

dude, i wanna see a picture of this vintage sealed toy!
my advice is if you are not that in G1 toys, sell it to other crazy guys and let them worry about opening it.lol
last, your story is not a story, it sounds like a fairy tale. hahahahahaha

Open it. There is no guarantee the folks kept it in pristine condition the same way one of us nerds would have all this time, pop that sucker open and make with the playing.

Crazy lucky story though, enjoy it!
