Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly are teaming up to play comedic versions of Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson for Sony’s “Holmes and Watson.”

The movie will represent the third collaboration between Ferrell and Reilly following 2006’s “Talladega Nights” and 2008’s “Step Brothers.”

The film will be produced by Mosaic and Gary Sanchez. Etan Cohen will direct from his own script about a duo that faces off against enemies from across the globe.

Ferrell’s “Daddy’s Home” grossed $240 million worldwide for Paramount. The comedian worked with Cohen on last year’s “Get Hard,” which earned $100 million worldwide.

Reilly will be next seen in “Kong: Skull Island” and will return as the lead voice actor in Disney’s “Wreck It Ralph” sequel.

Jonathan Kadin is overseeing the project for Columbia; Chris Henchy and Jessica Elbaum are overseeing for Gary Sanchez.

Cohen’s writing credits include “Tropic Thunder,” “Men In Black III” and “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa.”

Warner Bros. saw solid box office results from its two dramatic “Sherlock Holmes” movies in 2009 and 2011, with Robert Downey Jr. starring as Holmes and Jude Law as Watson. Both grossed over $500 million worldwide.

Sherlock Holmes was created by British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in four novels and 56 short stories between 1887 and 1927. Basil Rathbone portrayed the detective in 14 movies between 1939 and 1946.

Counterpoint: Those actors playing those characters sounds insanely hilarious, and I'll be there opening weekend.

Reilly is a great actor when he isn't with Farrel. Farrel brings the man down to stupidity levels and he is better than that.

If they keep Reilly as the straight man and he acts like he did in Gangs of New York, and Ferrell sets up Holmes to be post mental breakdown, could work.

These two are great together, and it'll definitely be good for a few laughs.

Considering that it was really funny, that won't be a problem for me.

Oh god yeah, Talledega Knights was terrible. I got it for free with my PS3 and I wanted my time back. Hell, I wish I could have traded in my launch system for a newer model.

I prefer Step Brothers, but I did like parts of Talladega Nights.

I'm not worried about John, but I hope this does well for Will -- I feel his last few movies have been pretty poor.

    I'm game for this.

    Though imagine if they got
    Seth Rogen and James Franco?

This could be an average, run-of-the-mill kinda comedy... or an absolute trainwreck like most things with Ferrel's name on it. I hope tis is on-par with The Other Guys, which I rather liked. Thouh I must be the odd man out, as to me Step Brothers was a stinking pile of crap.

I just really hope this doesn't add another roadblock to the third RDJ and Jude Law movie finaly getting into production.

Guess I missed the memo, but when exactly did Ferrel become Public Enemy #1 of comedy according to the internet?? Holy shit.

You really thought that movie was funny? Ah well, Just goes to show that humor is hugely subjective.

He's had a few stinkers, but I don't get the hate either.

That's more shocking to me than Ephland liking Ricky Bobby.

Enh, kinda worn out on Sherlock/Watson retellings at this point.

Ever since Sandler left to do Netflix-exclusive films so people can forget Eight Crazy Nights and Pixels ever happened.

Will Ferrell has direct access to my funny bone. The guy just know how to make me laugh, and his improv is legendary. I don't know how he cobbles some of the lines he says together. You could even make a movie out of all the hilarious deleted scenes he's done. I especially love the movies where he works with John C. Reilly. They just play off of each other so well in my opinion. Other than Anchorman, Step Brothers and Talladega Nights are my other two favorite Will Ferrell comedies. I think this could be hilarious. I can already imagine them all dressed up in vintage clothing and saying ridiculous things in British accents.

Loved Talladega Nights and Step Brothers, looking forward to this one!
