I'm trying to track down this mold and am finding that I can get the Henkei version for about the same price as the Classics....

So what's the difference between the two versions? Which is a better figure?

    Thanks!

The Henkei version is the better of the two. I don't typically subscribe to the default notion that anything Takara does is infinitely better than Hasbro, but I do think that Henkei Hound is worlds better than the Hasbro version. I feel the same way regarding Henkei Smokescreen. It's all in the deco. The color scheme is dead accurate by comparison. And the extra detailing really makes the mold pop as well. The Hasbro version isn't bad. It's just plain.

Henkei is much better. He is a darker green, which is classier and more military-looking, he swaps the white thighs for gunmetal-grey thighs, and he has a proper yellow stripe paint app wrapping around his hood. He's head and shoulders above Classics.

All the above, plus the Henkei has a chrome front bumper. Henkei FTW.

The chrome on Henkei Hound works spectacularly well.

Henkei hound, the green on the universe mold is way to neon for me. The henkei version has that deep green you see in most military vehicle toys, plus the stripes and stars to match the g1 color scheme.

Although, at least on the re-release from last year, the dark grey lacquer doesn't on so well, and rubs off. At least the bare chrome underneath doesn't flake.

But yeah, throwing in my vote for the Henkei one as well. The darker green is more accurate to the character, and there's a few extra paint details, like the yellow striping, that makes the toy look sharper overall.

While I agree overall, I don't think you're using the word "neon" right...

The Henkei is leagues better. It's one of the few Henkei figures where the chrome is placed well, and I love the darker colors. Also, I don't know if it's just me, but even the quality feels better overall compared to the North America version.

    It's just you.

Probably the "I paid double for this so it'd better be quality" effect.

Any other figures besides Hound and Smokescreen where the Henkei is the clear victor in terms of quality, paint apps, etc?

    Optimus Prime and Megatron.

I paid $200 for my UM/Skywarp set, but I don't think Skywarp is any better in quality than the rest of the seekers. I might just be assuming that because my Universe Hound was bought in 2008 while my Henkei was brand new.

The only Henkei Classics fig I own is Hound. I took the effort to score that version so I think it's better.

Henkei is way better. He's got a darker, better looking green, dark grey instead of white, and cartoon accurate yellow stripes.

I'm not typically a fan of the Henkei figures -because of- the chrome, but I think the two figures you just mentioned along with Megatron, Inferno, Ratchet, Ironhide and the three original Seekers absolutely dominate the Hasbro versions.

Almost every Henkei version is better, including the above mentioned, Astrotrain, Grimlock, in fact, I can't think of any US version that's better off hand. Maybe walmart red Powerglide, and a couple that are just about as good like Jetfire, but not many, IMO.
