Alrighty. I've finally finished the fourth installment of the Henkei Henkei manga.

As per usual, there are a few things:

    1. Read right to left - it's Japanese, after all.
    2. The translation is the important thing, not the images. This is intended to be a guide for those who are unable to read the manga but still wish to know how the story goes.
    3. Enjoy!

Wow, I really did not like this one. Sure, the art is great, but damn is the dialogue really crappy. I really hate when Japanese stories (e.g. Gundam Wing) get into that metaphysical inner-monologue bullcrap of "what is my purpose?" "what is a soldier?" It's really hard to put it into English without sounding utterly ridiculous. I actually took a bit more liberty with my translations than I normally do with this installment simply because it would have come out even more Engrish-y than it did already. For instance, I refuse to use the world "destroyer," and instead opted for "vandal, like you." I also reworded some other things to make them flow a bit more nicely in English. But rest assured, nothing in the story is changed. This is just a more regionalized translation.

God, I hope the next one is better.

    It's Human Genocide!

I think I liked "Fire in the Sky" more than this.

Thanks Bete for doing this. I agree the artwork looks good but the story is weak.

That was a neat take on the helmet, but Skyfire's always been emo like that.

Thanks for the translation Beat.. though I have to agree with you... this one seems to be really lacking in a lot of ways even with the obvious work you put into it.

Oh, and yeah, Skyfire's monologue did sound like something out of Gundam Wing...

    Nice art, though!

It continues to be nothing less than baffling to me that, despite their recent history of jamming absolutely everything possible into the G1 cartoon timeline, that Takara decided to make Heneki a reboot...

Why is Starscream's face always so ugly in this? His toy doesn't look this bad.

Interesting take on the helmet gimmnick, but ultimately it just drove the story into a brick wall and called it resolution. Thanks a lot for taking the time to translate it, though. :thumb

One thing I'd like to ask: what do the sideways boxes mean? I don't get what they're there for. (are they something that's already in the manga?)

odd, they used the henkei deco for decepticon skyfire, and they used the classics deco for autobot skyfire.

The sideways boxes are translations of the little summaries that every page has in the corner. Naturally, as Japanese text can be written vertically, it doesn't leave a lot of room for adjustment when you translate it to English (which can't really be written/read vertically with any sort of ease, anyway), hence the sideways boxes.

Glad to see that I'm not the only one getting the "dumb" vibe off of this story.

Okay, I started to do a high quality insertion of the English text into the Manga for Issue 1, but the darned vertical boxes did cause problems. I finally figured out a way to do it though... it's just going to require some Flash magic, and more time than I originally expected. But when I do, I was wondering if anyone had high res scans of the pages? Right now, I'll just be using screen shots of the pages that are on their site.

Also, does anyone know if there would be any legal/copyright issues with me posting that online? I wouldn't be charging, and it's already available for free... but I'm not expert in such rules. Especially internationally.

Oh, and thank you Bete, as always you have been a great help to those of us who don't read Japanese! :D

Wasn't expecting gold from a toy freebie comic, but I like what I saw. I'm more about the art then the story for things like this anyway and the art made ol'Skyfire look good. Glad I'm getting him.
