now i'm not sure what qualifies as overheating but it feels like it gets warm easily, so im trying to figure how to tell if its overheating or just regular warm?

You should probably install games that you play onto to your hdd.

Keep it in an open space to make sure it is well ventelated along with making sure nothing is blocking any of the fan holes and that the console is not sat on carpet.

This applies to the power brick also and see if that helps :)

Not to hawk a product, but less than a week after I got my Xbox last Sept I bought this, Xbox 360 Intercooler STS for Xbox 360 | GameStop and it's been miraculous. It really keeps the system cool to the touch even after 8-9 hours of continuous operation. When my dad got his Xbox, he got one too, and a friend who's planning on getting an Xbox this Fall is already budgeted for one.

The only time my xbox got hot was when a lightning bolt struck my house and blew it up. That was a fun day.
