I'm going to make a montage on Youtube of me playing Call of Duty on my Xbox 360 but I don't know what people(such as Machinima)use to film their TV or where to buy it.

So do any of you know what device I should buy to do this?

If you don't have a capture card for your pc it could be a bit tricky

What I've done is actually record it using a DVD recorder VCR combo device, then took the DVD and converted the recorded video for use with programs like adobe premier

I got a USB video capture device from Tiger for $40.
I got it to record 8MM tapes off my camcorder onto a hard drive, but you can also set the Xbox up in SD display mode and then hook that into the capture device and record it on your PC.

Honestly, I don't know how the people who record this stuff in HD do it.

There are times when I ask why I love you, and then times like this (when you post stuff that's useful to me) that I know exactly why.

I've been transfering old VHS tapes to my Digital Video camera and then moving those files to my PC because I didn't want to spend 100 bucks on a capture card. This sounds like a badass deal.

    You have to ask?

I am pretty impressed with the device, but the file size is quite large.
I've been messing with the capture settings and it seems like no matter how many tweaks you make there are really only two settings:
Good quality with about 2GB per 30 minutes, or 700 MB per 30 minutes and the video looks awful.
I'm really not worried about the file size because I have lots of digital real estate -except for the one hour I tried to put on a DVD and I was told by the application the DVD couldn't hold all the information.
I am using the Cyberlink Studios that came with the device -there may be a better tool out there.

This is the one I bought: Avermedia.
But in hindsight I think I would buy this: Diamond.

It seems advantageous to have the 'record' button on the device.

I was about to ask for a link. Thanks. I'm backing up family wedding videos and some of my own "fucked up" home movies when I was in highschool. This will work perfectly. Also 2gigs for 30 minutes is hella good, considering the commercials I sometimes export at 1.5 gigs for 30 seconds. in HD, yes, but still.

Wait, the Diamond one is better because of the button, or are their other advantages?

    edit: WTF? http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicat...m_re=Homepage-_-Spot 01-_-CatId_17_S170-16415

Yes -just for the button, I'm not certain of any other advantages.
The one I have records requires you to press 'Record' in the application and I may have bumped the mouse or just can't find the red circle in the application for some bone-headed reason.
Basically, after clicking 'play' on the camera, my mind has wanted a nice physical 'record' button to click as well, plus the camera is hooked into the device so my hand is right next to that record button anyway. I don't really have any experience with the Diamond -it might suck in every way.
I'm just envious of that one button.

The file size is a mystery because it's a crappy Camcorder source and the output resolution is only SDTV anyway.

That is a good price -even for a refurb.
A BD Burner? I wish I had the money.
Curious that it says it has Vista but right below it is the phrase "Windows 7 pre-installed".

I know, I have one. It's a great fucking computer, and I have burned some of my HD recordings to Bluray and they look great. It's also great for editing in HD, and Batman Arkham runs great on it. 800 bucks is a great deal.

I only ran into a real shitty problem when I installed 7 on it. 7 was shipped to me free when it was released as a deal for buying the laptop, but it made a lot of my authoring software stop working (and in some cases, completely gone), and my recovery discs no longer work.

Looks nice if you have the budget for it.
I guess you can plug your PS3 or Xbox in via HDMI and record that way?

That's what I've seen recommended on Machinima, so that's what I posted.

I just plug my DVR into the tv and record. And then upload it to the computer.

There's also the Xbox 360 Neighborhood program bundle, but that's...er...not supposed to be publicly available. :redface2:
