Ok so my PC (I'm currently using my mac for this) has one nasty bugger of a virus and I can't seem to get rid of it. I was hoping someone on here has the know-how to help me out? Below is listed the symptoms and what I've done thus-far to get rid of it...

    SYMPTOMS:

    1. Desktop Wallpaper locked onto a "Your System is Infected" background
    2. Phoney windows pop-ups warning me my system is infected that that I need to download a "special anti-virus software."
    3. Several attempts to get me to download "Advanced Virus Remover" sofware
    4. Requesting my "e-mail" and "license code."

The thing is I KNOW this is the virus for a couple of reasons...mostly because my anti-virus software NEVER asked me for my "e-mail" and NEVER provided me with a license code. Also, my computer has been infected before and NEVER has had that "Your System is Infected" background.

WHAT I'VE DONE: (No pun intended)

    1. Downloaded and ran Windows Malicious Removal Tool 06092009 version TWICE
    2. Ran personal anti-virus scan
    3. Ran SPYBOT Search and Destroy

Despite all this, it's still lingering on my computer...am I missing something? Is there a special removal tool to get rid of this on Windows Support Center that I just looked over? Any help will be appreciated.

Actually I was obtaining Musical files of questionable legality...and wiping the hard drive IS an option, but hopefully it'll be the last one.

    1. Restart your computer.
    2. When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu.
    3. Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
    4. Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode.

And here's a link with some potential manual removal troubleshooting:

Remove Advanced Virus Remover, removal instructions

AWESOME this is EXACTLY what I have! Good to see my personal files aren't at risk, but it was probobly a good move for me to immediately unhook the internet anyways. I'll run this as soon as I'm home from work and let you know!

Much appreciate everyone's help on this! :)

Good luck mang! And yeah, that Malwarebytes is really good stuff. Try downloading and installing after you get into safe mode and try some manual steps.

What you have is not a virus. It's called scareware. It's basically a rogue program installed on your PC, which typically is downloaded by other malware so you probably more than one problem, that looks like a genuine spyware removal tool. It will display alerts and pretend to scan your PC and tell you it's found all sorts of viruses and to pay a fee to remove them all. However, it's all bogus. It's trying to trick you into paying the fee. The program itself does nothing.

Most updated anti-spyware tools should detect it and remove it. I recommend Spyhunter by enigma software. I actually had this exact problem not long ago, and all of Microsoft's garbage never caught it and didn't detect it when scanning.
