I am writing an essay about discrimination in America that Obama will not win the presidency. My question is he the first black person to run or be nominated president? I tried Google but I didn't find anything I don't want to give misleading facts.

thanks I hate writing papers with a passion to kill. schools should focus more on teaching us about grammar, not about being a great writer.

Trust me, it helps later on if you find yourself in a job where you need to produce written reports to the powers that be. Heck, it also helps when you write out an application. Nothing makes a worse first impression than a poorly written application.

I understand that what I mean is that some teachers want the students to write a perfect paper just like someone who writes a book, or articles. Plus some teachers don't know how to teach to make this subject even worse.

First: this sentence is confusing. Are you writing an essay arguing that Senator Obama has no chance at winning the nomination or the presidency because of his race? (I'm not trying to get political, I'm just asking.)

Second: the politically correct term is "African American," not "black."

Third: don't get me wrong - folks are happy to help if you ask. But asking here (or using Google) shouldn't be your first step. Wikipedia is a good place to start, as are encyclopedias in general. However, for academic purposes, encyclopedias are only a starting point. They are not to be cited! Use encyclopedias to help you find relevant books/articles/media. A great first step is asking a librarian how to find the information.

Fourth: Get used to writing papers. It's good for you. It puts hair on your chest. It builds character. And if you intend to continue your education, you will be writing a lot.

I never used wikipedia to look up information for my paper like someone said is a fan site. Yes, I'm going to argue that Obama will not win the presidency, because he is "African-American" not "black". Like I said I don't mind writing what I hate is that some English teachers really don't teach students how to be a better writer. They also grade on personal preferences even though some deny it.

All of my "black" friends are so friggin sick of the term African American and frankly so am I. My good friend is from the U.K. He is BLACK, not African American. Hell, he is neither African nor American yet he gets that stupic label slapped on him. Talk about PC run amuck. Screw PC. African American is the dumbest term ever. He wants to be called black and yet no-one will call him that because they are afraid.

    Sorry.....*end rant*

Well, I could certainly see why a black guy from the UK would have a huge problem being called an "African American".

Not trying to push any non-political talk rules here, but I don't think being black is what will ruin his shot at the presidency - I think what will do him in is that "Obama" sounds way too much like "Osama".

    Silly people might get confused.
