Which PS3 should I choose? (You can choose more than 1 choice).

  1. The 80gb with PS2 Backwards Compatibility Software.

    35.3%
  2. ^The same 80gb mentioned above but bundled with Motorstorm.

    8.8%
  3. The 60gb with PS2 Backwards Compatibility Hardware.

    55.9%
  4. Other type of PS3 (explain in your post).

Aaahhh! 6! No body told me there'd be 6!

PlayStation 3 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alright folks, the holiday season is steadily creeping up on us and I've decided to start thinking about buying a PS3. To prepare for this endeavor, I've already been buying games in advance (Metal Gear Solid 4 Special Edition, Mercenaries 2 Special Edition) and definitely plan on picking up TRANSFORMERS on Blu-Ray at BestBuy for $9.99 this coming Black Friday. For $10, you probably should too.

But here's the problem, there's 6 different versions of the PS3. 6! Well, 7 if you count one more that was released in Europe, but that doesn't matter right now.

To help you help me decide, here are the 3 most important things:

    1. PS2 BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY is a MUST!

As my brother plans on taking the PS2 we currently have so he can play his games when he wants instead of us both having to share it all the time. I know all PS3's can play ps1 games, but not all can play PS2 games. I NEED it to do both.

    2. I want all the bells and whistles: 4 USB 2.0 ports instead of 2, Flash card readers, SACD support, PS2 compatibility.

Basically some older PS3's have things others now don't. The newer ones only have 2 USB 2.0 ports instead of 4, No Flash card readers, No SACD support, and No PS2 compatibility. I want everything I can get when dropping money down on this bad boy. I want to feel like I'm getting my money's worth.

    And now the hard part:

    3. The BETTER backwards compatibility.

There's this talk that PS3's with the PS2 backwards comp. hardware are able to pull off the backwards compatibility better than PS3's that only use software to do it. If this is true, then does that mean the hardware ones can play more games than the software ones, -OR- does it actually not mean the number of games they can play and just refers to their performance to play PS2 games when compared side by side?

With these 3 factors in mind, that brings the choices down to 2:

    Model:
    80 GB (NTSC) [43]
    Model Number(s):
    CECHExx
    Available colors:
    Piano Black
    USB 2.0 ports:
    4
    802.11 b/g Wi-Fi:
    Yes
    Flash card readers:
    Yes
    SACD support[42]:
    Yes
    PS2 compatibility:
    Yes- Software (emulation)
    First available:
    2007-08-01 August 2007
    In production:
    No

    Model:
    60 GB (NTSC) [43]
    Model Number(s):
    CECHAxx
    Available colors:
    Piano Black
    USB 2.0 ports:
    4
    802.11 b/g Wi-Fi:
    Yes
    Flash card readers:
    Yes
    SACD support[42]:
    Yes
    PS2 compatibility:
    Yes- Hardware (Emotion Engine)
    First available:
    2006-11-01 November 2006
    In production:
    No

I have heard that despite the 80gb having Backwards Compatibility Software, for the PS2, the best one to get is the 80gb bundled with Motorstorm, and not the 60gb that has the backwards compatibility hardware. If this is true, then please feel free to confirm it. Everyone's help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Me too. The hard drive is not an issue, as it can easily be upgraded.

I honestly care much more about the backwards compatibility as I have a few obscure PS2 titles and fear they might be too obscure that they won't run on it.

i has the 80 gig MGS4 bundle PS3 and yeah

    its awesome

backwards compatibility is great. it plays most of all the PS2 games i still have. the hard drive is huge. i have first 2 seasons of TF:Animated and a few episodes of Fringe on there and there's STILL room for crap loads more. which is a heck of a lot more than i can say about my xbox360

    so yeah

    i love mine :p

i got the ps3 with motor storm and you cant play ps2 guitar hero games. Gh3 for the ps2 will work for maybe a minute but then it will freeze up. so i think the ps2 backward thingy can play guitar hero. Just to let you now if you buy a ps3 controler, but its not the normal black one that comes with the system it wont work with ps2 games. my dad bought a broncos controler and i you cant play ps2 games on it and the shake the controler thing doesnt work either.

if you can find it the metal gear 4 PS2 80 gig bundle , get that, it has software B/C but it works with almost every game, I have a 60 gig myself, great system.

But despite what Sony says, they will probably update their systems to do full B/C later in the future with a firmware update once the PS2 itself is dead. They're making Singstar PS2 games load in the PS3 that don't have B/C, I can see them doing it for every game later on.

The only thing with the later models if you just get one in the stores now, like hte new 160 gig that comes with Drakes, they use less electricity and run faster. So they don't get as hot. The older 60 gigs run at 250 watts but the new 80 gigs run at 110 watts.

oh yah, for anyone who remembers me! I'VE COME BACK FROM THE DEAD! and my 10,000 posts are gone! NOOOOOOOOOOO!

You should definitely get one of the SACD-compatible PS3s. Be aware that the 80GB model is likely going to be a litter more quiet than the 60GB model due to further integrated silicon => lower power dissipation => lower fan speed.

There's a dedicated site about SACD on PS3 here with FAQs and an overview of the proper units.

It's really not better to go with either 80GB system over a 60GB system. the 60GB model's hardware-based backwards compatibility lets it run a lot more games than the 80GB versions. and quite a few games the 80GB version will run don't play correctly.

essentially, the 60GB version runs more games than the 80GB version, and the 80GB version has trouble playing quite a few games as well.

before deciding to go with the 80GB system, use this page to check every game in you library to see if it will even run, or if it will run in a way you'd be happy with

Dude! I remember you from WAY back! You once hooked me up with the Saint Seiya Hades episodes. Nice to see you around.

This is a great thread, I too am looking to buy a PS3 but I'm confused about what version to buy.

i'd go for the cheapest one with BC and all the whistles you want, and stick in your own drive. i got a 360 gig for £50, so much space its great.

I say 60 gig and upgrade the HDD. It will be a sad day if my launch 60 gig dies. :(  I used it to play through some PS2 games I missed on. SOTC I'm looking in you direction.

Pretty sound advice. Although I've never done it myself, it is apprently easy to swap out the drive.

What are the specification of the Warranty?

In other words, if I buy a Brand New Unopened 60gb or 80gb PS3 off of eBay, will the warranty still be valid, or do I also have to have the receipt from the store that the seller bought it from for the warranty to be valid?

    Hades was so awesome.

Right now I'm just waiting for Left 4 Dead to come on steam so I can play it!
