Every person that visits my house eventually asks me the same question when we get to my little home office which has my measly collection of one-hundred something TFs on display.

"So, do you have them all?"

Obviously, they don't know in-depth about Transformers to ask the question, and if I didn't know, looking at one hundred+ TFs in a single room I might be tempted to ask too.

But I finally got a followup question last night..

"Okay, so how many Transformer toys have there been total?"

I'm stumped. And while I am the type of obsessive-compulsive to sit down to a computer and find out, I obsess & compulse intelligently and figure there may be another around who's already got the number.

    Anyone?

The best I could come up with was 1563 in the Transformersland.com database. I don't think that counts many of the variants.

EDIT: I suck, I just noticed they are missing some stuff like Animated Swoop, Sentinel Prime, and Elite Bumblebee. This number is even less reliable.

Everyone's recordkeeping is going to be a bit different (i.e., what counts and what doesn't), so there is absolutely no conclusive answer, nor will there ever be. The all-encompassing spreadsheet that I've been maintaining for around ten years puts the number at between 3500-4000... I'll stand by that estimate as being just about as close as we can get.

Yeah, what exactly counts? Only 100% new molds? Major retools? Any retools? Major redecos? Any redecos? Minor variants? Repackages? Multi-packs? Do Mini-Con partners count as separate toys? Etc.

The best answer you could ever get is a ballpark number since there are constantly new figures being released.

Seibertron.com has 1,611 photo galleries, so that's a pretty good number I'd think.

I'd think anything beneath 4K is way too low. I'm gonna guess that it's about 5k or more.

As good as Seibertron's galleries are, there are way too many egregious and numerous gaps to consider that figure to be even close to an indicative total. I just took a glance at their RiD gallery as a random example, and they're missing Fortress Maximus, the Predacon trio, all six Spychangers and all four of the Build Team; that's 14 toys, and those are just the omissions that I can identify at a cursory glance, from one single page...

I lost count in the mid 90's at about 1,000. Today it's more likey double or more than then.

I'd say go with ams' answer, if you're pressed for an actual number. It seems like that would cover everything, including all the stuff outside of the US. As for US-only, probably about 1/3 to 1/2 of the first total sounds right.

My guess is anywhere between 4000 and 6000 if you count all of the repaints, retools, exclusives, and international figures.

Your answer should simply be "a whole hell of a lot more than this."
