Has anyone in North America gotten the most recently released Headmaster/Masterforce DVDs? I think I read that they are region free. Are these worth picking up? Thanks?

there are region free ones that are English/Chinese Dubbed. Those are horrible, they do not have japanese audio.

I picked up Headmasters a few months ago. It's region zero (plays on any DVD player), but it's encoded for PAL. If your DVD player has a PAL-NTSC converter then you're in good shape. Google your model of DVD player to see if it has said capability as this feature is not something DVD player manufacturers are allowed to advertise prominently (say, on the box for the player, for instance).

The set I picked up was produced by Metrodome. Picked it up fairly cheap on Amazon.

Did the Metrodome set have Japanese dialogue with English subs?

A couple of the subs on the Headmasters set aren't great, but the show is perfectly watchable even so. Unfortunately, Masterforce and Victory aren't region free, they're encoded to Region 2 at Sony's insistence. That's a pity since the subs on those are much better, and the shows as a whole much more enjoyable. I really must watch those sometime.

And this is why when I had to replace my son's DVD player, I got a region-free one on amazon :)  <adds set to bday list>
