An idea has occurred to me that you might have guessed based on the title of this thread.

I was given Specialist Ratchet, a repaint of the Dark of the Moon deluxe Ratchet. I don't collect movie toys so I wasn't expecting much when I opened him. Other than his head this figure can very easily fit in with my collection.

And just now I realized that if I could perform a head swap on him he would make a very adequate Ratchet for the Prime cast. So I looked at the figures I own seeing who had the most similar head to his Prime design.

Thunderwing is the best I have and honestly with a little work I think it would work well. But there may be an easier and better head out there that I couldn't think of.

So I pose the question to the boards. If you were to head swap Specialist Ratchet to make him Prime Ratchet, which head would you use?

Also I guess I wanted to pass this idea along to others. And now to poke around and see how difficult it would be to obtain another Thunderwing head before I commit to this.

Personally I'd use what's readily available to me, i.e. Universe Ratchet or possible Kre-O Ratchet. With some modding, it could work.

Are you trying to do this with as little modding as possible? Thunderwing has a ball joint while Spec Ratchet has a (for lack of a better description) slot joint. One head I found (or maybe initially read) works fine with no modding is the combiner head from PCC Darkstream/Skyburst. The red doesn't match exactly. I painted one up:

Mind you it's not a great match for Prime Ratchet, as per your original question, just trying to help if you are worried about modding.

I'm not drastically worried about modding, just being lazy.

That head from Skyburst looks fantastic. I don't own it though so I would have to find a way to get one and I suspect Thunderwing would be the cheaper route.

And yeah, Thunderwing does have a ball joint but I already figured out what I could do. I would use the back of Ratchets existing head and the front half of Thunderwings. I would then cut away pieces from the back to allow the face to sit flush. I probably would also take a bit of the Ratchet face and glue it as a neck of sorts to the Thunderwing face since it sticks out a little. My rough mock up I did while experimenting seemed like this would all be fairly easy to do.

Well it's a fun project so good luck with it!:thumb  However we are getting the Deluxe Ratchet figure from the Prime line soon so it may not be necerssery. This is great however as a DOTM Ratchet figure that's a homage to the TFP Ratchet!:D

Darkstream should be extremely cheap and easy to find, and I think the head looks fantastic on Spec. Ratchet!

Honestly, the forum is going to get really slow for a long ass time. He might as well just post here.

... Yeah. It should. Sorry. I guess I wasn't thinking.

Well I said screw it and ordered a Darkstream. I really like the look of that head. It will work for my Ratchet until the actual figure is released, when ever that is. And afterward it can work as a custom bot.

I think I got my Darkstreams at Target when they were clearancing them, but TJMaxx and Marshalls have been carrying PCC 2-packs too, for anyone with those in their areas. (Granted, most of what I see there is Leadfoot, Icepick, and Sledge.)

An actual Prime Ratchet is due soon enough.

Takara solicited a Deluxe one a while back, and Hasbro can't be far off.

Odds are we'll see more at Toy Fair.

    So personally, i wouldn't bother.
