With the PS3 acting as a Trojan horse, and a greater number of studios with more hot films behind it, BluRay looked like it was going to win the format war. Hell, they came out and said so a few days ago.

Then there were the announcements of hybrid players and even Warner's hybrid BR/HD discs, which suggested that there may be a peaceful accord reached between the two sides.

But now the biggest players in home entertainment have come down in support of HD. Could this mean the end of BluRay?

I'm rootin' for HD DVD myself, for 3 reasons:

    1. It's half the price.

    2. I'm an xBox 360 owner, which is backing HD DVD with a $199 add-on.

    3. Sony is sacrificing their share in the gaming market just to try and win the format war by putting a Blu-Ray player inside every Playstation 3 and selling them at an outrageous loss . Those kinds of business tactics should not go unpunished by karma.

I don't know if porn will be the deciding factor it was some 20 years ago. Back then home porn was a huge deal, nowadays it's nothing new. There's so many sources for it now, and DVD itself probably won't be going anywhere for quite some time. Still, was a pretty stupid move of Sony to block it; if for no other reason that it gives more credibility to the people who say "LOL! It's Betamax all over!" And that the industry actually wanted to go Blu.

But now its in HD! :p  Not too easy to send whole movies over the net in HD.

Anyway, I've been saying that bluray was going to loose for a long time now. Kinda a shame too since the storage capacity is so huge. But Sony has had a slew of problems with this thing. Price to manufacturing problems, delays. HD-DVD has the brand name and reasonable priced players, and now it has the content that VHS used to win last time. Sony is in deep shit now.

I don’t care who wins so long as some one does before I get a HDTV.

    Hmm.. what about CD-ROM, CD-R, DVD+R, etc?

Blu-ray wasn't solely developed by Sony anyway. There were a number of companies behind the format. In their rush to Sony-bash, many people seem to forget this.

I'm really not convinced there will be a winner.

Much like there was no winner between Super-audio CD and DVD-Audio. Both sides died, because no one cared and everyone went to MP3 for superior capacity, distribution and portability (and, frankly, easier piracy, which does drive take up pretty well), despite the inferior quality.

I suspect downloadable video will kill both formats in real terms to be honest.

Just in case you are unaware, there are currently several sites where you can pay a monthly fee to download HD Porn off of a web site. You'd be surprised how much HD content you can download in a month.

Not that I know anything about that.
