Anyone see this movie? I am simply amazed how well John Travolta can dance in high heels!
The release of this film has convinced me, beyond a reasonable doubt, that John Travolta is now out of the closet.
I'm not really a musicals kinda guy and I wouldn't have gone to see it if my boss hadn't paid me to, but it was alright. John Travolta did sell the character surprisingly well, though.
He was very convincing as a woman, lol I was really not expecting that.
1988 > 2007
John Waters > John Travolta
Lobotomy > John Travolta in drag
Oh HELL no.
I saw this on Friday night and LOVED it! I saw the touring Broadway production a couple of years ago, and was really looking forward to the film version until I heard that John Travolta was going to be playing the role of Edna. Harvey Fierstein had originated the role on Broadway, and I would have preferred he reprise his role in the film, but for whatever reason the role went to Travolta. It took about 1/2 hour to get used to the idea, but his performance really grew on me. Overall, I thought the movie was a great adaptation of the stage production. The choreography was well done, the singing was well done... there really wasn't anything that disappointed me about the movie!
I don't know if anyone knows this or not, but it seems like some people may not. Most probably don't care. But I'm sharing anyway. The reason that Travolta was cast as Edna is because the role is always performed by a man in the Broadway production. So it stood to reason that they would get a man to perform the role in the film version as well.
Not even my GF could drag me to watch it....Watched Rattatoie instead
-it was an amusing argument-
"It has music you are a Muscician!"
"True True but anything I would learn from the music would be what not to do"
"Come on it has Chrsitopher Walken! you love most of the movies he was in"
"His awesomeness Is cancelled out by Travolta"
"Okay Ill give you that point....What would it take to take me"
"A huge rock to my head or a pair of headphones to wear the whole thing loaded with the first chapters of harry potter."
"Okay what you wanna watch...if you say transformers....."
"The cook rat"
"Okay Ill admit thats probably a sure shot move so lets go"
Correction. Edna was originally portrayed by Divine (a transvestite..so sort of a male) in the original 1988 John Waters film...which was turned into a Broadway play years later, featuring Harvey Fierstein and other men in the role...and now, since it is kindasorta tradition, Travolta in the (completely unnecessary) remake.
Did Ricki Lake ever lose all that weight? If not, she could've played Edna. That would have been a more interesting twist. (cue Robot Chicken)
travolta scares me these days. he looks like hes on something. like a stepford man actor or sumin. i think its the botox.
...you do -know- what a transvestite is, don't you?
me and the g/f plan on watching it this weekend....she really wants to go see it...she went to watch TF with me so i'll be watching this with her.
Thanks for the update on the film version. I was only talking about the Broadway version and the film adaptation of the Broadway version. Having never seen the film, this I didn't know.
Hairspray needs a sequel :
HAIRSPRAY VS MRS. DOUBTFIRE
Mrs. Doubtfire was horrible. Hairspray was actually good. But that is my opinion
C'mon, Mrs. Doubtfire is a classic. Plus, Aerosmith's "Dude looks like a lady" is featured in the movie. Can't get any better than that.
As someone who routinely votes for Austin's homeless transvestite mayoral candidate, um..yes. I guess I draw some level of distinction between a man whose entire public persona is a drag queen and one-offs like Fierstein/Travolta in those respective adaptations. Meh.
Just wanted to make sure... you'd be surprised...
