    Ok...
It might be the end of the world when they reactivated that. The Universe is infinite, or near infinite. And what is a fraction of infinity? Hopefully the Earth is bigger than that number. They are trying to recreate something that existed long before "anything" have existed or something that no one possibly every witnessed. Everything is still a theory. We believing that this thing is safe just like we believed the experts that asbestos is a safe fire retardant, Phen-Fen is an acceptable weight-loss product, coal or octane is a great energy source without looking at it's repercussions.

There is a saying that curiosity killed the cat. I bet this thing will no be ready until 2012. Funny if a new universe was created on top of Earth or our universe.

So even if they found this God particle. What the heck they are do with it? Productionize it? Weaponize it? Just another problem to deal with.

    Meh.

If the thing is safe, there's nothing to worry about.
If the thing is dangerous as all hell, causing instantaneous atomic decimation to the entire planet faster than the speed of light, there's nothing to worry about... because we won't feel a thing, and there won't be anyone around to bitch about it afterward.

    ....except the Romulans.

In the grand scheme of things, and in an age where budget and trade deficits number in the high trillions, and where a single military aircraft can cost nearly a billion dollars...

For the advancement of science, is ten billion dollars really that much money? Keep in mind, this is also 20 nations pitching in for it.

How is something that breaks a few atoms into thier components, like smashing two lego sets together, supposed to destroy the planet/universe/silly outcome not based in relity again?

As for what to do with the discovery of the higgs boson, why not discover for the sake of discovery?

This is supposedly the "Big Bang", which I don't believe in btw. Sure, I can buy the fact that the universe is "expanding", but I don't believe it all came from 1 spot, and suddenly exploded with the force of a hundred men *citation needed. I believe, with no evidence to support, that the creation of the universe was way more complex and erratic than 1 single explosion.

But yeah, supposedly if you destabilize an atom, or some shit along those lines, it's like opening a floodgate of rabid chinchillas, except slightly worse.

Supercollider? I barely even know her!
And that's when they restarted the supercollider.

But seriously, atomic power also relies on destabilizing atoms, splitting them, actually. It creates a ton of heat and radiation, but you don't see nuclear power stations carving miles-wide craters in the landscape very often, do you? And this is way harder than that, instead of smashing two atoms together, its like speeding it up until it tears itself apart. Something goes wrong, they turn off the enormous amount of power needed to accelerate the particle, and everything stops pretty quickly.

I'm sure this will all be fine. And if it isn't, well, it'll make life more interesting, no?

I don't see a problem. A huge project like this is bound to have teething problems.
I'm keenly interested to see what we can learn from it - or better yet, develop from it.
All the paranoia is sci-fi silliness. Still, would make for a great Doctor Who story.

It's when those teething problems could involve the creation of a black hole that could consume the Earth that people begin to worry.
