I didn't get him as I had other things to buy when he first came out but here are the things others have said about him: i) He's small ii) Quite well made - in terms of design and engineering iii) Could be prone to "chipping" If I'm not mistaken, there were rumors that Bandai intends to release the rest of the Goldtan line-up as a boxset...
Got him, love him. He's basically a little gold cube that turns into an awesome looking (and, yes, blocky) bot. The articulation is great, although the thighs cannot bend backward, but there aren't many poses that require that kind of movement anyway. He's easy yet surprisingly fun to transform. I know a cube isn't that interesting, but it's weirdly cool. Hard to explain. He has a nice heft, too, for his size. If you like what you see in pics, you'll like it even better in person. Just keep in mind that it's not very big. The "lighter" mode is a little taller and wider than a standard Zippo lighter, and about three times fatter. The bot mode is considerably bigger since he's got nice long legs. The only bummer for me is that the hands aren't part of the transformation and need to be attached/removed.
No. Additionally, there are hollows in his arms and backs of the legs required for the transformation that can be filled in with optional parts. http://pony-hp3.web.infoseek.co.jp/GOLDLIGHTAN.htm I'm not really into the classic robot look, so in and of itself, the little guy does nothing for me. Although I have to admit, there's something strangely attractive about the frivolous nature of the thing. What other transforming toy can make the claim of being plated in 18k gold?
Gold Lightan is cool !! Some video clips are here !! http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=gold+lightan http://www.bandai.co.jp/releases/J2006050801.html
I notice in that series of photos that they make it look like he can be transformed with the fists attached. I'll have to dig mine out (I moved recently) and see if that's possible. I'm not really sure why I like this little guy so much. I don't even like gold, and I typically shy away from gold toys. Must just be the sheer rediculous nature of the thing that I'm attracted to. Along with the fact that he really is a fun little bot.
About $50 plus shipping. The individual reissue Lightans are all up for preorder on HLJ: http://www.hlj.com/hljlist2/?Dis=-2&from=detail&Word=lightan
Thanks for the links but how come Bandai is releasing another Gold Lightans? And am I correct to assume that all the Lightans will be issued in a gift-set?
