Have you read the Marvel G1 comics? If not, start there. They were recently reprinted in IDW's "Generations" Series.

Have you read Last Stand of the Wreckers? There you go.

Have you read Marvel: Dark Avengers and Marvel: Siege? Most of the tie-in books for those are pretty good, IMO.

Well, a lot of the recent marvel stuff (and even the recent TF stuff) has gotten into the habit of referencing really old and obscure stuff (Skyquake and Modok, for example). So it might be better to start from the VERY beginning (or as close to it as possible) and work your way forward.

See what kind of comics and graphic novels your local library has and try just "grazing" through what looks interesting or new to you for a bit. Then use the stories you liked as a starting point to go deeper.

IDW has just started putting out "Classics" for the original Marvel US and UK. I definitely recommend the UK Classics volumes 1 and 2 as well as the US volumes as well which would give you a good portion of the Marvel run (and certainly the best parts of it).

Also, I would recommend some of the IDW parts and yes, I'll even go on record for recommending the Dreamwave G1 comic. Volume 2, War and Peace was especially good as was War Within (before it was abruptly cancelled).

For IDW, I'd recommend Escalation, Devastation, All Hail Megatron, the Ongoing, the current RID and MTMTE are all pretty good. Spotlights are mostly good, I'd also recommend Maximum Dinobots and Ironhide.

Amazing Spiderman, read Amazing Spiderman. Its so much fun.

And if you would have said DC, the new Batman series is outstanding.
