    This from Chris Ryall, IDW Publishing's Publisher/Editor-in-Chief. RyallTime Blog:

    I want to know who the big dude is behind Drift that stole SG Rodimus' goatee. Check it out here.

    At first I was iffy on buying the Drfit mini-series, I did not really get into the Drift character.... but the appearance of Dai-Atlas raised my eyebrows and peaked my interest....

    I wonder, based on the cover we saw last week (?), if we may see some Brave characters...

    I think this is gonna be a great read :)

    Not a real big fan of Alex's work though. Sometimes It's hard to tell what is happening in a panel.

    *scratches chin* I grudgingly admit that Dai Atlas does not seem like he would be a bad fit for this sort of story.

    {rant}
    *sigh*

    This is becoming one of my big pet peeves with the current generation of comics. Grabbing any old high-profile Japanese character, YANKING them out of context and then shoe-horning them back into this G1-redux continuity without any regard to what the character's original storyline was actually about.

    BUT, that's because I actually watched all those old japanese shows, and don't just know the guys from oggling toy-catalogs, IDW knows their target audience, and are giving them exactly what they want. WHo am I to complain? {/Rant}

    But none of the characters in IDW seem to follow their TV series counterparts, I mean like when in the tv series did Bumblebee take leadership?

    I like that they are using more obscure to the west characters like Overlord and Dai Atlas

    Exactly. It gives a bit more variety of characters, and in IDW continuity, can be used in a great many ways just like Overlord was.

    I look at this the same way we saw cats like PMOP, Darkwing, Dreadwind and Landmine all had seperate characterization in the Japanese series and the Marvel comics. Dai Atlas should have been released in the west and he should have had an appearance in the comics. He's badass. It's 20 years too late but we're finally getting that appearance.

    Now if we could just get a reissue.

    I know what ya mean, man, I get the same feeling. But really, the American G1 cast is getting just as much of a yank-and-shoe-horn - their portrayals and stories aren't in line with the G1 cartoon either, y'know?

    That said, I think the thing about Japanese characters that makes them different in this regard is that, unlike the American cast, they HAVEN'T been put through the continuity wringer, and had a dozen different iterations of their life story told to us over the last 25 years. For the vast majority of them, the cartoon is IT - the one, defining, archival portrayal of that character for posterity. And moreover, oftentimes (particularly when Dreamwave did it), they just grabbed the characters to use because they were "cool" and "obscure" and "foreign", not because of any actual love the creators had for them, or more importantly, any UNDERSTANDING of what the characters are about. I mean, just look at Leozack in last year's BotCon comic, where the character's loveable "shmucky ideas-above-his-station schemer who is constantly being undermined by his own underlings" personality was ditched completely and replaced with a one-note gag about him acting like a Japanese anime character, just because the character comes from Japanese fiction.

    But as I said, Dai Atlas seems like he'll actually fit into a story like this pretty well, so I'm giving this the benefit of the doubt.

    The reason behind this mini-series to GIVE Drift a backstory so everyone can stop bitching about how big of a mary-sue he is, whatever that means.

    I like Drift's design, and I need to pick up his spotlight and miniseries.

    I really have no idea what your problem is. I've watched those shows too, and I love when they do this. I eagerly wait for them to use Star Saber.

    Screw a reissue. Let's have a Generations Dai Atlas.

    Screw Generations, you can't have a guy named Atlas and only have him be deluxe size.
