Agreed. While death is common in the TF universe, Roberts goes about it in rather a gruesome way that makes you realize this isn't your 80's comic anymore. That robot doesn't just get neatly shot, they "transformed themselves to death". There is a sort of creeping horror in his work that I really enjoy.

Oh, you are in for a treat now. Most of your concerns will be allayed as time goes on, I think that's safe to say. Roberts does an impeccable job of fleshing out the characters of previous no-marks and non-entities, to the point where you genuinely care about them. And of course you'll have your heart ripped from your chest to teach you for caring. You'll laugh, yes, but many of the funniest moments are subtle rather than slapstick (though there's some of that too!). The storytelling is first rate, pretty much all the foreshadowing has a great payoff, the dramatic moments will have you on the edge of your seat, and be it courtesy of Roche or Milne, the art is never less than stunning. Enjoy!

I went and read Eugenesis as soon as I'd caught up with MTMTE as I couldn't get enough. What an epic. I was choked up by the end!

Yes yes, I know, but I was referring to Ryan's statement about Rewind and Tailgate looking to cutesy to be frizzled war veterans. I believe that much about Tailgate is already established in issue one anyways. But I will bite my tongue beyond that :)

Edit: shoot my version of the trade doesn't have a cover to separate #1 and #2. I took it down. Maybe you should censor your quote too.

Fair enough, I think. Sometimes the humor doesn't quite work for me, but I find it's usually balanced.

Seconding (thirding? fourthing?) this sentiment. I understand the impulse, because it's what I always want to post when I come to this thread - but then I stop myself, because yes, the particularly unique thing about this thread is getting the books through the eyes of someone without too many preconceptions. Roberts should have to earn Ryan's faith on his own, without anyone vouching for him.

I feel bad for Ryan having to read MTMTE with such lofty expectations heaped upon it. I'm sure the force awakens would have felt more satisfying if the crazy expectations wasn't so unrealistic and the same applies here.

Discovering mtmte alongside the fandom here first time around was amazing and surprising for me given how little I knew about roberts at the time and I'm sure Idw's previous mediocre stuff helped keep our expectations low.

Might also be worth checking out the old individual threads of each issue as I bet they would make fascinating reading

Sure, but for many of us, the hype train had already steamed into the station. Roberts had done an amazing job on Chaos Theory, had his mitts all over Last Stand of the Wreckers, and looked like the polar opposite to Costa - a fan raised on the UK comics, who'd been dreaming up Transformers stories all his life and penned a flipping novel, rather than a property-hopping industry oddjob man who clearly approached comics as a pseudo-cinematic medium. We expected to love MTMTE - we just didn't anticipate that it would bring in a whole load of new fans to boot.

That's the bit that still amazes me. I knew I would love MTMTE. I didn't know that when I (despairingly) recommended that other people read it, that some of them would take me up on it, read it, and love it or at least like it.

I guess it depends on the person. While I don't like "Oo, the next issue is a good 'un" and so on, I, personally, appreciate the 'that becomes important later' because I almost ALWAYS miss out on things. I will literally read an entire plotline, then ask, "So, I don't get it, why did X do that when he knew Y?" to which someone will say, "Well, did you read issue 7? Because here you'll notice that X is saying...." Because of that, I tend to be THAT person who will let you know to pay attention to a thing. Never thought it would be considered a spoiler though. :)

My own snafu up there aside, I can see how being too zealous with the "this is important later" can be detrimental. Sort of like how Avatar's previously on aegments would frequently dull the edge of their own surprises.

But I wonder how many people following this retrospective will get some new Revelations this time around?
