Grizzly mauls hiker to death at Denali National Park; bear shot - U.S. News It's the first reported fatal grizzly attack in the park's history, Denali was designated a National Park in 1917. Quite remarkable that almost 100 years went by without any reported fatalities. From the article, seems like the hiker/photographer got too close and the bear felt threatened, what a shame.
Sucks to be the hiker, sucks to be the bear, but this is what happens when we decide to get back nature and apply human qualities to a wild animal.
It's unfortunate, but sadly after mauling that hiker the bear might've developed a taste for human flesh. It wouldn't be safe for visitors to the park to leave a bear like that on the loose.
I don't think it was a case of humans trying to control nature in this instance, just a photographer trying to get the picture of a lifetime who got to close for comfort to a deadly wild animal...ingnoring the park's rules in the process. I understand why the bear has to be put down, not wise to have a bear develop a taste for human flesh. However, since I hike and backpack a lot in the Smokies, I can attest to the stupidity of people getting too close to the black bears in some fashion or another, unfortunately it happens there on almost a daily basis...the majority of people just have no respect for nature, which really is a shame.
