I had to think about this one for a while...

Everything from Aeris Dying to the revelation from Lutz in Phantasy Star 4 (where you see Alis' past and all the different generations from the game in a flashback), to Snake landing on the Rig in MGS2. Link Riding through Hyrule on Epona for the first time...And the Opera Scene in Final Fantasy 6.

But one stood out for me that a lot of people don't know about.

There is a boss on Shadow of the Collossus. It's a giant flying serpent. And the only way to get on top of him it to ride your horse at full speed along side the boss until you are close enough to leap off and land on his flapping wing. This thing is almost a quarter of a mile long (relatively speaking), and the rush of seeing something like that (that you would normally only see in a movie) but being in full control of it, then hand over hand climbing up his wing and running along his back to get to the weak point, left me in awe for a long time after I finished the game.

If I had to pick one great moment in all the games I have played, that would be it.

The ending of Halo 2 and the Final Mad dash to the ship in Halo 3 top my list. Below that is the Final Hazard battle in SA2....just seemed pretty awesome to me at the time of playing it.

    Metal Gear Solid 2 trailer.

    Hands fucking down.

    No arguments. Ever.

The very best, most jaw dropping, incredible, jizz inducing moment in gaming ever.

Oh wait, you mean while playing?

Well... uh... fuck, I dunno. Beating Mario Kart on 100cc only to see... 150cc?!

    WHAAT?

    YESSSSS!

Don't know how i forgot Shadow of the colossus the whole game is epic, the end of the first tomb raider when you have to get out before the temple collapses. and uncharted everything leading up to the statue leap.

No it doesn't have to be gameplay. ie. Aeris dying.

I remember having an argument with a guy at gamestop (I think it was still Walden Software at the time, maybe), and he was so convinced that the trailer was prerendered and that the real game was going to look nothing like that. I went looking for him when the game came out, but he didn't work there anymore.

I will go so far as to say that the Intro/Trailer for that game got me RIDICULOUS cool points at my job at the time.

We were working on that Freelancer game (My only claim to fame, sadly), and we were doing the cinematics, and the game had rain in it, but they were using little individual textures for each drop of rain. I watched that MGS trailer so much and then I bought the DVD that let you play with all the cinematics, and I checked out what Kojima had done, and I came into work with all these suggestions.... "Instead of one texture per drop, why not make a textures represent multiple drops and in a cluster, so it looks like messy rain. They tried it and all of a sudden the city looked like something out of Blade Runner. Then I suggested putting particle emmiters on the character's shoulders that emmited "splash" animations when the rain was hitting them. They were blown away by that. Then I suggested that in Cityscapes where it was always raining, to make the floor textures partially translucent and place mirrored copies of the character beneath the floor, faked reflection. The latter never made it into the game, but they loved it. Finally, in one of the snow planets, I showed them a demo where I attached emitters to the bottom of the characters feet, and timed them to release footprints whenever he took a step. Again, not used, but earned me brownie points....All of this from Kojima's MGS2 intro. Yeah, I'd say that's second on my list. I'm going to find the demos I made with those things and put them up on Youtube.

    We've talked about this already!!!

    Oh well, its cool.

One that comes to mind right now is that final mission and ending in Freespace 2. You're defending a convoy of ships that're flying to a warp gate that's escaping this star system that a group of uh.... (Pssst, hey, you... yeah, how do you explain the Shivans?) that are doing somthing major bad to the system's star/sun. It may sound stupid having the final mission being a giant escort mission, but it's really a gigantic fight for your survival.

Then you're told that the star is becoming unstable and then SUPERNOVA! You have less than a few minutes to escape to the jumpgate before you're incinerated. After you escape, or die, the game displays a cutscene of the Shivans exploding the star with some of the creepiest music I've ever heard in video gaming.

    Yes I am a Freespace 2 fanboy :)

If I could call Shadow of the Colossus a single moment I'd say that takes the cake for me.

    Or anything from MGS3.

Seems like this same topic keeps getting posted in different phrasings, and I always bring up those 2 games!

Heading towards the ship on the final mission of Halo 3, everything is blowing up around you, you have flood and sentinels shooting at you, and giant metal beams crushing the ground you need to drive on. Bonus points if you use a vehicle other than the Warthog.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and that first time you touch down on the planet Tallon? in Metroid Prime.
It took a long time for Samus to go 3d, but boy was it worth it. Breathtaking visuals and a brilliant soundtrack. I spent a good while just running around the Overworld looking at the scenery.

EDIT2: Last one (maybe): Vivi going mental and obliterating the Black Waltz after it kills the Black Mages trying to protect him.

I think Aeris dying was hands down the worst moment in gaming. I laughed so hard and wondered why anyone cared. Such a useless character. Then again, I felt FFVII was useless too (Yeah, you can tell I didn't like it). However Shadow choosing to stay behind at Kefkas Tower at the end of FFVI... a truely great, and sad moment in gaming. Not the best though. The best came recently for me.

I was playing SSBB with some friends and in this particular match the 4th player was out already. It was myself and one friend with 1 stock left, myself playing as Meta Knight, this friend playing as Link, and my other friend with 2 stock playing as Samus. Made an alliance with my friend to take out Samus first, since all it'd take is one of Samus' final smashes to knock us both out. Well, we're all fighting for a smash ball and Link got it. So we're fighting Samus just trying to time it right when we have her surrounded. My friend unleashes Links final smash and around the same time Samus jumps leaving me the unlucky recipient of Links final smash, knocking me out and Samus waiting behind link to launch a charge shot, knocking Link out.

Sure I didn't win, but that shit was funny!

I have to go with the ending of FF8. (if anyone remembers some of my posts under other lists like this, this shouldn't surprise) I was dissapointed with FF7's ending and FF8 was emotional, incredible fully orchestrated music, and just overall a satisfying ending.

    Honorable mentions:
    -FF6 opera
    - FF6 ending
    - FF6 intro
    -FF6
    - How beaten up the two page preview in EGM of FF6 was from me looking at it so many times
    - Seeing Starfox the first time
    - Seeing Super Mario 64 the first time
    - Seeing Virua Fighter the first time
    - Getting Sonic 2 for Christmas
    - Driving through GTA3
    - Driving through GTA: Vice City listening to some of the best 80's music
    - Ok, I have a lot, I'll stop

There's a moment in Metal Gear Solid 2. Not everybody has it at the same time. Some people have it right away, some have it long after they've beaten the game, a lot of people never have it.

It's the moment when you "get it." When you understand exactly what the game has been telling you the whole time. Why Jack is the way he is, why the story is the way it is, why you're not playing as Snake for most of the game.

When you get it, it's like you've been swimming upwards through pitch-black water the whole time, and you just broke the surface.

The entire journey from Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain to the end in Legacy of Kain: Defiance. The series had one of the most epic stories to ever grace video gaming history.

for sure, the metal gear series has been responsible for some of my favorite gaming moments (sniper wolf anyone?), as indeed was all of shadow of colossus.
