    Edit:

Grand Maximus was more of a supporting character. In the Japanese Headmasters, Fortress Maximus didn't seem like much of a leader either.

I'll get to watch the English version soon on DVD. I've only had the Japanese Laserdisks to refer to until now. Perhaps leadership will become more apparent.

Uh, yes he was. After Rodimus took off, it was basically Chromedome and FM in charge. And FM was more the overall leader, Chromedome felt like just the leader of the 4 headmasters.

Yeah, G Max was just a supporting character who brought the Godbomber technology to Hawk and Ginrai on Earth. He fought alongside Ginrai on the Moon against Overlord and Black Zarak and was present at the final battle against Devil Z. Then he left when the transtectors got their own personalities and followed the Decepticons into space.

And yeah, Fort Max was THE Autobot leader when Rodimus left after Cybertron blew up. Chromedome was more like Ultra Magnus in that he was a field commander. Last night I watched Battle on the Beehive Planet and he actually referred to himself as "second in command of the Autobots."

Yeah, Grand Max was just a supporting character...Fort Max on the other hand became leader after Rodimus left.

Grand Maximus must have been somewhere high in the chain of command of the Autobots, though, since he did bestow the title of commander of the earthbound Transformers to God Ginrai, I believe. Strictly speaking, he outranks him even though he barely shows up.

To be more precise, G.Max only appeared in the Japanese cartoons - cannot remember the name of the series but the series revolved around the "Powermasters" and 'Pretenders".

That would be Masterforce. No idea which episodes Grand was in, my files don't have the titles in their names.
