so like ive been using my compact minolta dimage for the longest time right? its only a 3.2mp. and ive been getting by with it thx to mah PS skillz, but then my buddy right, he comes around to visit mah kid and take these super duper pics with his SLR - hes an ethusiast see - the pic in my sig is by him, so then BAM! i totally need to get an SLR now. so i did. got me a nikon d40. its not like im not familiar with SLR, had to use em back in school for projects and such. my 1st choice was a canon, EOS, cause thats what i was familiar with, but then i tested the one within the same price range as the D40 and it was like crap - then again the d40 is a new model. amongst the 1st set of pics i took for testing: no different from my regular pics right, but this was like unedited in PS. pretty decent in low light conditions, still need to get a feel for the focusing tho, but im a happy camper despite setting me back 600 bucks (and to think this was entry level range, yikes). so yay me!

ONE OF US! ONE OF US! Congrats on the new toy....trust me you'll love it! I joined the league of SLR a couple of years back and now I have all sorts of lenses and accessories to go with it...it's quite easy to get hooked!
Congrats, KA! $600 isn't bad at all. Good deal! I have a Nikon myself and absolutely love it! Watch out, what Tricky said is true. It's highly addicting and before you know it you'll be spending quite a bit of money to get lenses and such.
Y'know, I'm glad I don't post on car-centric boards any more. The local major car msg board, so many of the people there had such serious money that if they posted about finally getting an SLR, they actually meant the Mercedes fucking Benz. KA I am glad you got yourself an awesome and useful camera. Now hie thee to thy local camera shoppe and purchasse thee an SLR Gorillapod.
