Search: Ex-Googlers Build Cuil Search Engine, Say it's Bigger Than Google

The site goes active today and apparently it's getting so many hits that the servers are down. Link to the site is as follows Cuil

It's interesting, but it also really sucks right now. I love the way it displays results, but it's nearly impossible to tell what you are truly getting. It'll say it has 9,722,331 results for a search, yet will only show like 15 of them, and none of them are relevant to what I am searching. And the searching is so finicky that you have to search for something like 4 or 5 different ways before you find a recent result. With more work it could be usable, right now it blows. This thing barely rival Alta Vista, let alone Google. Google's throne is not threatened with this.

    I searched for Optimus Prime.
It says I got 800,000 results.

However, the few that are displayed on the page are old and irrelevant.

And if they wanted the search engine to seem like it was built by netrats for netrats they should have called it "kewl".

You also have to realize that this is it's launch day. It could get better. Will it defeat or even rival google, probably not.

We didn’t find any results for “rodr-evil”

    Some reasons might be...

    * a typo. Please check your spelling.
    * your search includes a term that is very rare. Try to find a more common substitute.
    * too many search terms. Please try fewer terms.

Finally, try to think of different words to describe your search.

Print is dead. The internet crushed it. So why, oh why, is the hot new trend on the internet to make searching and app designs that look like print?

    Argh. Frustration.

    Who has that LOLCANOEZ gif?

I went to CUIL and searched on CUIL and the first entry is "Properties for sale in Cuil Mhuine, Ireland - Properazzi"

    EPIC FAILURE!

    Make mine Google.

Cuil - 9,200,000 results for Transformers
    Google - 57,900,000 for Transformers
    Yahoo - 119,000,000 for Transformers
    Ask - 4,515,000 for Transformers

Yahoo seems to be the best for Transformers searches

But how relevant are the searches? Numbers mean little without relevancy.

The problem with trying to take on Google is that Google is constantly changing the game. Google news, Google Image Search, Google Maps, etc. Until a site (not just Cuil) can top Googles various features, then they will simply be meaningless headlines quoted all over the place to get hits.

Google Maps will keep me coming back. I love typing in a zip code, getting the map and then being able to search for retail spots and have the markers appear right on the map. It's been a great way for me to find restaurants easily and know exactly where they are at.

I had the hardest time finding the phone number for our local post office.
I looked it up on Google Maps and it had listed right under the address.

I don't expect CUIL to be that impressive the first day, but if I am on CUIL and I search for CUIL, I would think that the CUIL search engine would at least be on the first page of results. It was when I searched for CUIL on Google.
I don't plan on ever looking there again, honestly.

Just for the helluva it, I'm gonna start using that.

Is there a toolbar? 'Cause that would definitely increase my use?

At first glance I couldn't even pronounce "Cuil". That already tells me people won't use it. They can say it's pronounced "Cool" all they want, but I would take one look at that and say "Hell no".
